Xiwtool is a wireless network scanning and connection tool for Linux desktops. Release 0.08 adds the ability to monitor and connect to public Wireless Access Points, like those found in coffee shops and libraries, including automatic connections by programs like NetworkManager. As usual, Xiwtool also manages private networks that use WPA and WPA2 authentication, and can diagnose legacy networks that use WEP encryption, as well as provide information about a connection's status. Release 0.08's installation optionally allows normal users to administer wireless connections when configured for Linux systems that don't use root accounts. This release also contains many internal changes to improve reliability in crowded network environments. Xiwtool is written in C and requires a machine with a wireless network card and a driver for the Linux kernel. Building xiwtool from the source code requires development packages available in many Linux distributions. The program is free software and is licensed under the GNU General Public License.
