The issue of an OS dying is more common than you would like, but how can you save your precious files when to fix it means wiping your computer and starting from scratch?

If your reading this, you probably have been in this situation, either with your own, or someone else's computer. Unless your a technical wizard and can debug the issue and get the OS working again, its time to look at getting what you need in a safe place, the versatility of linux, especially in live media form is one simple remedy.

1) Download a linux distro There are millions to choose, but this is just for a simple task so I will throw in my current favourite, Ubuntu. Head on over to Ubuntu and download one of the .iso files.

2) Burn CD Insert a blank CD and burn the ISO to the CD, braseo is good on linux, on windows i would use BurnISO which is free and found via google.

3) Boot From CD You boot up to a nice working desktop, from here you have an environment to save your documents

4) Plug in External Storage For this you can use a USB HDD or USB Pen Drive, just plug it on and Ubuntu will mount it

5) Transfer Files Any file you need, move over to the external storage, keeping them safe for transfer back when the computer is working.
