Stephen writes: "Are you people not reading the press before you publish articles trashing us? Does Google News not exist where you live? Let me put on the cranky pants here...."

"Now, I've only been the director responsible for JDS at Sun for a few months now, so I admit I don't know the history around what promises were made to Tom and Sam. Sometimes things are beyond our control, but if we promised you something, we should have at least given you an explanation on why we had to break that promise. So if that's what happened, let me be the one to apologize."

Stephen, we like the way you refer to us as "you people". We also wonder if you bothered to read the article.

looks like you hit a nerve, Tom!

Gotta love the excuses- "It didn't happen on my watch." And so what that it's "open sourced", (I should read the license to see how open it is), the point of Tom's article was why should anyone want it? Given the history of the project, and Sun's continual shifts in direction, I would have liked to see some real answers from Mr. Harpster, instead of defensive evasions.

Nice work.
Getting angry and puffing out those rooster feathers is supposed to scare ya off, ya know. Puffs out that thar chest. That's his answer. Why, not by the hairs on my chin is someone gonna say nothing 'bout my pro duct.

The license is the cddl.

And the other thing, where has this guy been? It was never Sun's policy to kill Linux - unquote. It's not defamation of character to call some one a liar if you know the truth. I believe the saying is "know the truth and the truth will set you free". In this case, as a journalist, it will keep you free.
Here's a couple of phrases that can be readily applied to Sun, "The truth hurts" and "If the cap fits" and one i've modified just for this occasion, Their are lies, damned lies and Sun policy".

Do they truly believe that any real sizeable community will grow up around JDS, if they do i either have to question their grip on reality or at the bare minimum question my own grip on reality if a significant community does arise.

One might say...

..that the real reason that Sun doesn't want to have JDS based on SUSE is because Novell acquired it. Surely not though! Sun is a wonderful company who loves Linux!! They love Novell too. They often dream of dealing directly with Novell instead of with crummy ole, not loved on the earth, SuSE.

One might say that they entered a 10 year partnership with Microsoft to counter the growth of Linux. Surely not though! Sun just realizes the massive benefits that come from anyone who partners with Microsoft!

One might say that they opted to create OpenSolaris to hedge their bets against their pro-old style IP mantra (often seen singing along side their close partner, Microsoft). Surely not though! Don't you realize that Sun created open source?!!

One might say that Sun is up to its old tricks. You remember... like when they tried to take over all of Unix. Sure not though! We all know that the Open Software Foundation (OSF) was simply a coincidence and not an attempt to strike back at Sun for trying to corner the Unix market.

Sun is your friend. Your very best friend. They are your neighbor wearing a light blue sweater. Together, you and Sun can become part of a greater future. A friendly future. Where Sun and open source communities work together on open federated tracking standards and open digital rights management with open source licenses and open arms to all. Where hardware will be developed to run OpenSolaris (which as Sun says is really just Linux with a different name). With open drivers that work with OpenSolaris (which is Linux according to Sun). And most importantly with Microsoft Windows certification... which makes sense since Microsoft (new pro-open source partner) and Sun (the creator of open source) are working hard to deliver a better more open open source than ever before.

Open the door and let the Sun shine in!!

... and the world will be a better place... ... and the world will be a better place...

... for you... ... and for Sun... and Microsoft...
