In order to write DVD/DVD-RW from shell prompt you need to install a package called dvd+rw-tools.

DVD is another good option for backup, archiving, data exchange etc. You can install dvd+rw-tools with following commands. Also note that this package works under *BSD, HP-UX, Solaris and other UNIX like operating systems.

DVD on the CLI writing is a lot simpler than CD-writing. This is a good little cheat-sheet. Lately I have gotten in the habit of archiving useful pages like this with Konqueror's 'Archive Web Page' command. It creates a single HTML page. What's really slick is the source file is simply a tarball of all the original pages and images, so you don't need Konqueror to access the information.

The examples the man page gives is a sufficient cheat sheet. ;o)

Even though it allows you to just specify a directory, I usually create an iso first and burn that.

It's funny.

I now use K3b for most of my CD burning, but ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS do DVDs from the command line.
