It's official: ATI Radeon drivers to be open sourced
http://www.linux.com/feature/119049
It's a bit of a misleading title, but great news :-) If I understand it correctly, ATI won't simply open the code for their current drivers but write new drivers, together with the community. Probably because there's too much non-ATI code in the current closed drivers. It's likely that parts from the closed source drivers will be ported to the open drivers though.
It is about time!
Definitely a good move on AMD/ATI's part. If this finally results in a stable and decent performing driver for ATI chipsets, I will start considering them again instead of insisting on nVidia chips. I've never liked having to use nVidia's proprietary drivers, but unfortunately right now they are pretty much the only way to go and get something that works for my needs.
