I need an image that includes Tux (or derivative of Tux) but I can't draw, other than drafting or technical sketches. It needs to be original so that there's no question about permission to publish it on LXer. That's all the payment there would be, too: it would be available on LXer. Click my name and send me an email. |

grouch Aug 02, 2006 4:46 AM EDT |
LOL! I'm scared to even ask what that thing is. Have you been playing text-mode Quake? |
dinotrac Aug 02, 2006 4:50 AM EDT |
Well, it looked a whole lot better in the edit box. |

I am just stunned. I had no idea you had talents in this area. An attempt at an ASCII animation sequence: =^-.-^= =^o.-^= =^O.-^= =^O.o^= =^O.O^= =_______= I call it, "Cat waking up on highway". |

groan! |
tuxchick2 Aug 02, 2006 6:19 AM EDT |
groan x3 ow pain |
grouch Aug 02, 2006 6:23 AM EDT |
Well, it's not as painful as "goalie host". |
dinotrac Aug 02, 2006 7:45 AM EDT |
grouch - Sorry, but I have been out shopping with Mrs. Trac. Back now, and, contrary to others (who may lack your subtle artistic appreciateion), truly appreciate your direct and to-the-point renditions of flatlining. |
grouch Aug 02, 2006 7:56 AM EDT |
dinotrac: The finer nuances of high art, whether 'tis the prose of a pun or the delicate stroke of an ascii brush, just pass right over some folks' heads. (I think they're part machine!) |
tuxchick2 Aug 02, 2006 9:02 AM EDT |
Is 'high art' better appreciated under the influence of a recreational mind-altering substance? |
dinotrac Aug 02, 2006 9:05 AM EDT |
tc - It can't hurt. |
grouch Aug 02, 2006 9:09 AM EDT |
Coffee is not mind altering at lower rates than 2 gallons per day. I'm still almost a quart below that level. Are there no artists in this gang of geeks? |
NoDough Aug 02, 2006 9:12 AM EDT |
>Are there no artists in this gang of geeks? We're all artists. Just not the kind that work with canvuses. (canvi?) |
tuxchick2 Aug 02, 2006 9:16 AM EDT |
canvussii. |

I have just discovered that if I position the page just right and rock the mouse wheel back and forth, I can make dinotrac's penguin (or is that a meat cleaver poised above a rocket?) appear to breathe. |
dcparris Aug 02, 2006 9:40 AM EDT |
What's that saying, simple pleasures for simple minds? :-p |
grouch Aug 02, 2006 10:11 AM EDT |
Admit it, dcparris, you were exercising your mouse wheel, too. |
jimf Aug 02, 2006 12:17 PM EDT |
Ok grouch, I'm currently exersizing xara... see me later. |
dcparris Aug 02, 2006 12:43 PM EDT |
> Admit it, dcparris, you were exercising your mouse wheel, too. Oh man! Busted! |
cyber_rigger Aug 02, 2006 1:19 PM EDT |
Here are some ideas. http://www.informatik.uni-freiburg.de/~diesch/asciipinguin.h... |
dinotrac Aug 02, 2006 1:24 PM EDT |
Rev, grouch -- STOP PLAYING WITH THAT STUPID MOUSE WHEEL. Thanks to you two buffoons, that stupid penguin started breathing. Then it started calling me. "Why do I look so bad?" it asked. "Why am I only 2D?", it asked. "Am I a girl or boy", it asked. Rev -- I just don't have your counseling experience and am in no way prepared to deal with the problems of a gender-confused 2D stick figure penguin. |
dcparris Aug 02, 2006 1:34 PM EDT |
Dino, you're back to smoking HDD again, aren't you? |
dinotrac Aug 02, 2006 3:12 PM EDT |
Rev -- HDD? I don't -- wait!! I think I just saw a byte float by... Real cute little-endian one, at that. Later. |
jdixon Aug 02, 2006 4:19 PM EDT |
> Real cute little-endian one, at that. You're running Linux on Power or an older Motorola processor? |
dinotrac Aug 02, 2006 4:35 PM EDT |
>You're running Linux on Power or an older Motorola processor? Abacus, man. Just love slidin' them little beads... Runs real slow, especially X. |
jimf Aug 02, 2006 4:41 PM EDT |
Not even a soroban dino? Did you know that several Japanese Universities still offer a Doctorate in soroban. |
jdixon Aug 02, 2006 5:30 PM EDT |
> Abacus, man. Yeah, I guess an abacus would be little endian at that. |
dinotrac Aug 02, 2006 5:31 PM EDT |
jimf - If ever I lose a hand, I'll be a soroban man. |
jimf Aug 02, 2006 6:05 PM EDT |
> If ever I lose a hand, I'll be a soroban man. Ah, that should really be 'gain a hand'. Those guys really make the fingers fly. They can get results before you can get them on your calculator. |
dinotrac Aug 02, 2006 7:27 PM EDT |
jimf - The fingers fly, but have ya' noticed that the soroban is base 5? One hand is all you need!! |
grouch Aug 02, 2006 8:53 PM EDT |
They're all crazy! It's a complete madhouse. The title of the thread should have been, "is there a zookeeper in the area?" That's ok. It will just reduce the shock when unsuspecting graphics-minded folks send that email and get details. |
dcparris Aug 02, 2006 9:16 PM EDT |
Oh, you mean you wanted an artist? |
grouch Aug 02, 2006 9:30 PM EDT |
Bwahaha! I've snagged 2 artists, though one appears to have gotten away. jimf is not quite as fleet of foot, it seems. |
pogson Aug 06, 2006 4:13 AM EDT |
I gave it my best shot, but I had better keep my day job that starts on Tuesday: http://alicia.home.skyweb.ca/rhptux.jpg |

How about something a little stylized? http://www.flickr.com/photos/67085308@N00/208192959/ |
dinotrac Aug 06, 2006 10:15 AM EDT |
grouch - I suppose you could always do something like the penguin from my logo: http://dinotrac.com/dinotraclogo.jpg |
grouch Aug 07, 2006 5:16 AM EDT |
This place is swarming with artistic talent. How come it's been hidden before, or did I just not look in the right places? pogson: Is it ok to copy that image? |
pogson Aug 08, 2006 7:56 PM EDT |
Yes, you may copy it. My son asked why I bothered. He says there are many public Tux images on the web, of higher quality, he noted. Robert |
grouch Aug 09, 2006 6:38 AM EDT |
It's a unique Tux with a unique expression. I can't decide if he's telling some juicy news or if it's a you've-got-to-be-kidding look. The wide eyes, little twist to the mouth, and the slight lean to his/her right, all change the expression from the typical Tux. I really like it. |
devnet Aug 09, 2006 7:23 AM EDT |
I could put you in touch with the artist of this little ditty...I'm sure he'd be stoked about being published...this little penguin logo was an entry in the PCLinuxOS logo contest but I removed the PCLinuxOS text and have just the penguin. I thought it was unique and interesting. http://linux-blog.org/uploads/Penguin.jpg |
grouch Aug 09, 2006 8:09 AM EDT |
devnet: That's a fine looking stylized penguin and shadow, but as to publishing, my article hit the Newswire on the 4th using jimf's drawings. |
