I posted this elsewhere. I don't think it is good for the Newswire, because the 'issue' seems to be clearing up already. Some clickies: The original forum post and comments at Microsoft (now at 47 replies): http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=205... Validation issues - Microsoft is having WGA server problems. The NP Boing Boing article on WGA going Boing Boing: http://www.boingboing.net/2007/08/25/microsoft_wga_server.ht... Microsoft WGA servers down; all XP and Vista installs being marked as counterfeit At Digg, including a response from an MS official: http://digg.com/microsoft/Microsoft_WGA_server_down_Results_... Microsoft WGA server down! Results in un-genuine vista copies. The 2006 outage: http://blogs.msdn.com/wga/archive/2006/10/05/WGA-service-out... WGA service outage The unrelated, except in design exposure, Skype outage earlier this week: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070824/ap_on_hi_te/internet_tel... Users: Outage no reason to abandon Skype Apparently occurred due to reboots resulting from MS's "Patch Tuesday". Two fatal designs flaws in MS software revealed in a week. Think some users will get a clue? Nah. Not judging from the comments in the links posted above. Did I miss any links? My favorite comment so far (at Digg): Quoting: Folks, I guarantee that we're working on this issue right now. For folks wondering, MACHINES ARE NOT SHUTTING DOWN with reduced functionality. This is fun to watch from Linux. Oh, the irony. It looks like it is starting to clear up for some users, fun is almost over. Another irony: Those using pirated Vista, or not applying *any* critical updates to XP are unaffected. So pirates and hobbled systems are OK (so are corp systems like Dell's internal standard image). **edit** Bad clicky. Corrected clicky: http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=205... I posted this story from Ars Technica on LXer.com but haven't seen it yet. The link to the Ars Technica story is here: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070825-windows-genuin... It's also supposed to be on CNN. I picked it up from Fark.com. |

The WGdisadvantage is a GNU/Linux genuine advantage. We GNU/Linux users are free to use our PCs without interference by a corporation with its own agenda, to lock-in the world. It is very interesting how frequently GNU/Linux comes up in the discussions of WGdisadvantage all over the web. I left links to http://debian.org , http://goodbye-microsoft.com/ and http://www.knoppix.org/ on one site. |

Ubuntu is not Linux, according to this highly educated poster at forums.microsoft.com:
Quoting: MICROSOFT SUCKS...anybody out there have any experience with Ubuntu or Linux? Not sure whether to laugh or cry. |

Here's irony for ya' I'm on my work laptop right now running Windows XP Pro. When I saw the WGA story, I decided to check my system. Sure enough, there was WGATray.dll and WGALogon.exe. (I think those are the correct file names.) In any case, I have always been very careful not to install or authorize the installation of WGA, including marking the update as excluded and, when I had to download something from the MS web site, using the GenuineCheck.exe application rather than installing WGA to complete the download. A quick web search for RemoveWGA.exe took care of the problem. |
