I'm cracking up at Futurama- "Why is Windows 3000 used for prison guards? Because it always locks up!" |

Hehehe :-) Do you know what I also see a lot on TV lately? People using Linux computers in shows like CSI and what-not. It's usually the window manager theme that gives it away. |

Well, I always thought that tweaking a free desktop environment with themes, compiz-fusion, etc. etc. is prolly the easiest way for those folks to make a nice and functional "Hollywood-style" computer. Well, minus the HUGE alert boxes that spew out unnecessarily verbose information like "DEPLOYING VIRUS INTO FOREIGN SYSTEM, PROGRESS 56%" - that always cracks me up. |

Yeah :-) The one that really cracks me up though is that if you open a file on computer A and then delete the file from computer B, it disappears from computer A as well because the application magically closes. E.g. "Clear and present danger". |

Or when they destroy a computer's contents by shooting a bullet into the monitor. |

Hmmmm... any chance I could prod you guys to keep going and possibly cite examples of dodgy Hollywood computing? Might be fun to make up a list. |

Plenty of lists to go around :-) http://nand.net/~demaria/hollywood.txt (The Hollywood OS) http://www.qatarliving.com/node/104580 (Office Space, Sneakers, Swordfish) http://www.drivl.com/posts/view/494 (about programming in the movies. Has links to other lists as well) |

>dodgy Hollywood computing I suppose the stereotypical hacker taking 30 seconds to break into ANYTHING is too cliche to mention... And using a Mac to inject a virus into the alien mothership in Independence days could happen, right? I've always that that Steve Jobs was a little, well, different. But -- CHEEZ!!!! That scene in Jurassic Park where the smarmy little girl looks at the goofy GUI and says "I know this -- it's Unix!" |

My fave are the countdown intrusion detectors--- "Oh no, it spotted me!! I have thirty-eight seconds before I am shut out and then it retaliates!" And the remote intrusion detection system kindly displays a colorful countdown graphic that uses nice big TV-friendly numbers. |

Quoting:But -- CHEEZ!!!! That scene in Jurassic Park where the smarmy little girl looks at the goofy GUI and says "I know this -- it's Unix!" The really funny part is that this bit of Jurassic Park is actually realistic. That goofy GUI is an actual UNIX 3D filesystem explorer for a Silicon Graphics machine. The goofy part is a 12 year old knowing Unix, and thinking that knowing Unix means you also know the specialized security system running on top of it. |

I often point out these and other non sequiturs when watching television with my daughter. She gets upset with me for killing the illusion. |

The enjoyment of fantasy depends on the willing suspension of disbelief. |

The enjoyment of fantasy can also come from mocking the incorrect technology uses and such. :P |
Sander_Marechal Dec 13, 2008 1:32 PM EDT |
It's a different kind of enjoyment though :-) |
