This has been Linus stance on who and where the code comes from from the very beginning. If you have doubts read 'Just for Fun : An Accidental Revolutionary'. |

No kidding. Things like this are a great chance to see who actually believes in free software and who does not. If free software is the powerful that I believe it to be, then it doesn't matter who submits it. If the license is free and the code reviewable, life is good. Kernel hackers will check out the Microsoft submission for good/bad points. It will be accepted or rejected on its merits. Free software will prove once again that it is better than its "friends". |

Allow me to quote you on that.Quoting:If the license is free and the code reviewable, life is good. |

I'm not buying that argument, for the same reasons I've outlined before. |

This is just Linus taking another cheap shot at RMS and the FSF. It may be that some context was omitted, but as it's printed the 'Windows haters' snark comes out of nowhere, implying that everyone with a brain who has observed MS, the self-sworn enemy of Linux, FOSS, and especially the GPL, and their decades of illegal and dirty tricks, and is understandably wary, is a 'hater'. It's not worth all the huzzahs he's been getting. BTW az, the article headline is ironic, it doesn't reflect the viewpoint of the article. |

> If the license is free and the code reviewable, life is good. I would hope that my distrust of Microsoft is well known in these parts by now. :) That said, I agree completely. If Linus and the other relevant folks review the code and OK it, I have no problem with it being in the kernel. That's what they do every day, and by all accounts they're very good at it. This code should be no different. The fact that the code is from Microsoft should have no bearing on the matter. It should stand or fall on it's own merits. Now, given that we're talking Microsoft here, I'd be darned sure to check the code very carefully for back doors, buffer overflows, and memory leaks. It's not like their code hasn't been known to have such before. :) |

To All You Unbelievers: Here is another snarky story claiming MS was being coached by a Linux luminary [Kroah-Hartman] to come into compliance: http://www.sdtimes.com/link/33641 Whereas, MS honchos assure us they were working on GPLing the code well before they were blinded by the entrance of the flash in the pan guy running around giving orders, like a super hero type. Now tell me who are you going to believe? Wild haters, like me? No middle of the road moderates are best at hindering any advance are the most credible. So follow their lead. TC, MS's hatred of all things Free (GPLed) and misquotes about LInux being a Cancer are so, so yesterday*. YBT * My checks are in the mail. This time is true, they promised, they would not be dumb enough to lie to me again. |

Quoting: MS's hatred of all things Free (GPLed) and misquotes about LInux being a Cancer are so, so yesterday*. Of course they are, MBT. Just like my friend who swears to the judge every time she is busted for DUI that this time she'll realio trulio get her act together, get sober, and never drive drunk again. Which could actually be true this time since her car was repossessed. But in these here parts that doesn't get in the way of redneck ingenuity; she'll scam an ATV or riding lawnmower or something. |

Hmm lets see, cross or get in the way of MS and they will politely put you out of business, sometimes with pockets full of cash. Cross or get in the way of the FSF and the Stallmanistas, if you are very lucky you will just get branded a heretic, immoral, shill, and/or troll. If you are unlucky, the truly faithful will take up the cause, libel you from here to sundown and try to get you fired. Who was it again that we are supposed to be wary of? |
justintime Jul 28, 2009 11:55 AM EDT |
lol, azerthoth. I'm wondering the same thing :-) dinotrac: the world needs more sane people like you. tuxchick: you seem to see a smear campaign everywhere you look unless it is your heroes doing the smearing (which it usually is). |
Libervis Jul 28, 2009 12:10 PM EDT |
Both azerthoth, though I'm seeing more rhetoric from the "friendly" FS side lately and they annoy the h*ll out of me. Linus is right(TM). ;) |
TxtEdMacs Jul 28, 2009 12:39 PM EDT |
JIT, You're a professional. Nice no facts just inference. Keep it up, but you better not be better paid than I. However, calling dino sane borders upon the absurd. But you are new here, aren't you? Nonetheless, one of us may not be reading az, correctly, because those actions listed are more apropos for which MS is credited than the anti-fan contingent can be accused of yet. Some less level headed than I might accuse you of being biased, so unlike Linus. TC, I am glad you recognize, at last, I am your buddy for real. YBT |
softwarejanitor Jul 28, 2009 1:13 PM EDT |
@azerthoth As if MS or their fanbois have never tried to brand someone as a zealot, libel them and try to get them fired. I've never heard of Stallman or the FSF trying anything like that, so if you've got documentation, then come forward with it. Not to say that there aren't a few crackpots who claim to represent the FOSS community, but there are just as many on the other side who worship at MS's feet just because they love money and power that are just as bad. |
azerthoth Jul 28, 2009 1:38 PM EDT |
Reallly, I have heard *note heard* RMS label all non free developers as immoral, and the stallmanistas ... c'mon, there are one or two who post here on a regular basis. If that doesn't suit there is always BN, there are a whole slew of FSF true believers over there. It's all pot/kettle. |
softwarejanitor Jul 28, 2009 1:46 PM EDT |
@azerthoth Calling someone "immoral" isn't the same as going to their employers and trying to get them fired though. I actually had either someone from MS or a fanboi try to get me fired over a usenet posting I made a few years ago that was critical of MS. |

Meh! I think Linus simply wants to leave the politics to others. What he said doesn't surprise me and, honestly, there is no **technical** reason to leave it out. He's stated many times before, all he's interested in is good coding and good technology, period. Most of us are caught right in the middle of it all, between the extremes of "Who cares!?" and "Holy crap, it's M$!!!" BTW, tuxchick, here in Texas (and elsewhere, I'm sure), one can get a scooter 50cc or less without a license. I've heard them called liquor cycles since some folks with opt for one after their license gets suspended for too many DUIs. Dunno, though, in my hometown, an adult would be accused of being a D**n Yankee or hippie for driving one of them around. :) |
tuxchick Jul 28, 2009 7:05 PM EDT |
LOL liquor cycles! That's great, I might open a dealership here, next door to the Wheel Tavern :) |
dinotrac Jul 29, 2009 8:18 AM EDT |
TC -- Better be careful with those liquor cycles. When you're riding high, they're great, but when the liquor cycle swings into depression, the world is a terrible places. Wait -- 50cc? That's not enough for a good drunk. Nope. You'll need a lot more than that if you want to ride the liquor cycles. Unless you're a penguin (TOS retrieval). |
