So much for Microsoft's desire for Interoperability in this sphere. But then again, most LXer readers probably knew this already --- see http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/30291/

Andad writes:
Quoting:But there is no doubting that it is the end of an era, and one that many industry insiders had seen coming from the moment that Microsoft made the acquisition. Olstad admits that the focus on Windows will be "a hard change for some of our customers" but insists it's the right thing to do as it will allow the company to "tap into a valuable set of competencies and assets across Microsoft and deliver better technologies more efficiently to our customers".
Is this an example of MS's "Extinguish" tactics coming out before its typical "Embrace and Extend" tactics have been fully rolled out ?? (see the 'Embrace, extend and extinguish' Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend_and_extinguish)

I agree: they rolled out the "Extinguish" phase just a few months too soon. MSFT (or Wag-Ed, maybe) seems to be loosing its touch for the ambiguous.

I think this is the famed "Innovation on UNIX and Linux" Newspeak blog entry that goes with the article: http://blogs.msdn.com/enterprisesearch/archive/2010/02/04/in... I don't want to give DaniWeb any more clicks. About the blog entry, one can only shake one's head and mutter, "Wow, just wow."

Take the above quote from the article with this one:

Quoting:We’re introducing a Customer Upgrade Program that will help customers evaluate our hosted solutions and/or a Windows-based deployment. The program will help customers assess level of effort, plan for the project, and implement the upgrade. (Customers should contact their account representative for more details.)

And, as usual, it all comes down to moving people to Windows and generating more revenue (and lockin) for MS rather than any form of interoperability or innovation.
