The thrashing of Leviathan

Terry may be dismayed by the drive to increase controls on people and business in this already struggling economy, but he needs to understand that this is how Leviathan always reacts in times of distress. One need look no harder than the infamous Smoot-Hawley tariff for another example. Passed at a time when national and global trade was falling due to economic distress, it instantly quenched international trade even more. While Art Laffer may be wrong about a lot of things, see YouTube "Peter Schiff Was Right", his "Laffer Curve" is based upon the very sound observation that if restrictions placed upon individuals decreases, economic activity increases. Sadly, Mr. Hancock ends his letter with a recommendation for immolation, that if enough people get crushed maybe they'll wake up. I cannot condone that opinion in terms of Intellectual Monopoly any more than I can when talking about drug prohibition, taxation or war. That's not the first time I've heard that sentiment, there are lots of people disgruntled that their particular focus for Liberty is not seen or as clearly seen by as many as needed to overcome the bureaucracy and repeal the restrictions. Everyone has something they consider sacred, that they do not want to be interfered with. Mr. Hancock has put voice to one, will he remember that when he comes across a restriction that he doesn't feel so strongly about, but someone else does? When the "why don't people wake up" is on the other foot? |
