This is a wonderful essay, Carla. I don't think anybody has "the" answer for how musicians, writers, filmmakers and other creative types will be able to make a few shekels for their work. There will probably be more than a few kinds of "the," if we're lucky. You are right to point out that the pre-Internet era was no bed of roses, either. While you didn't address software, one of the main reasons I turned to open-source software was was my lack of comfort with the status quo, which is using proprietary software that was generally stolen and passed around. |
