Dear Andrea: It's "bear in mind", not "bare in mind", unless you have nude people on your mind. Second, what is an article about Linux job hunting doing on a website that claims to be for Linux beginners? You're not saying that the execs you describe as clueless are correct when they say that systems administrators are "dime a dozen geeks", are you?

OK, after all the nitpicking your article is basically correct about the state of the job market. The one you linked at http://reallylinux.com/docs/wantadsmad.shtml claims to be humor but the author is right: I've seen crazy ads like that. The other thing that is happening in today's ads is hyperspecialization. Working with Linux isn't good enough. It has to be SUSE or Red Hat specifically, and a specific version at that. Experience with RHEL 5 doesn't count if they want a RHEL 4 expert, donchaknow? If you don't have 10 years of Solaris 10 experience then forget it.

What she wrote explains why networking is the best way to get a job nowadays. If you are in contact with technical professionals you can often work around all the HR bull and get to the person who really is hiring. If they know you and know you have the skills then you really do stand a chance. I know that's how I keep busy and keep a few shekels coming in on a regular basis.

I beg to differ, sounds like an innovative method for successful interview grabbing the job from more talented competitors. Provided, of course, your body meets the rigorous standards required.

You hit the crux of the problem, with a diverse group of interviewers, no single body can meet the salacious needs of the individuals that comprise your prospective audience.

Sorry, it's a hard problem, for which I have no definitive answer.

Scott,

Just a suggestion, throw away the pants and bare it bare it all. However, if you are hired, it becomes my IP.
