Well, installing KDE on normal Ubuntu gives you the choice of both environments (as would installing Gnome in Kubuntu). Some people may want that option.

That's very true, jdixon, and I'm just giving a nod to the Kubuntu folks who actually do the heavy hauling to provide a KDE desktop atop Ubuntu.

It doesn't make any difference how you install it. All *buntus use the same package repos, and buntu-ized KDE and Gnome (and LXDE and XFCE) are all available in nice metapackages.
