A bit of irony to SCALE 10x....

1. It is occurring concurrent to the widely publicised SOPA/PIPA brouhaha. See the currently popular LXer thread 'Atlas Shrugged...' found at http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/32735/.

2. SCALE 10x's hotel and venue is less than 30 miles Southwest of Hollywood, the latter as the approximate location of the major movie studios (MPIAA).

3. Somewhat related to Rupert Murdoch's pro-SOPA tweets visualised are several of the following SCALE 10x speaking events:

- 'Meet the Cloud', event link found at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale10x/presentations/meet-cloud

- 'Build A Cloud Day', event link found at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale10x/presentations/build-cloud-day

- 'Introducing the Open Cloud Initiative', event link found at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale10x/presentations/introducing-open-cloud-initiative

- 'Panel: Open Source Cloud Computing', event link found at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale10x/presentations/panel-open-source-cloud-computing

- 'Keynote: Amazon and the Future of the Open Cloud', event link found at http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale10x/presentations/keynote-amazon-and-future-open-cloud

Presumably, even F/OSS cloud providers would be somewhat more concerned about any significant restrictions for accessing their services, yes ?

Indeed, the only SCALE 10x event currently scheduled as even mentioning SOPA is the Bird of a Feather Session covering this exact topic to be held 9:00 PM on Friday night at the Marina (see http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale10x/events/bird-feather-sessions )

Given the relatively late hour of this SOPA session, one can even wonder whether this was added to SCALE 10x as something of an afterthought ?

If SCALE is registered as a non-profit, they need to tread carefully when it comes to matters political.

@vainveenr, With all the SCALE events you list, maybe there will be a big and heavy CLOUD hanging over the presenters' heads :D (:hee hee: had to throw that in :)

My pun would be even more ironic if LA actually got some REAL cloudy weather or even rain at the very end of the week!!

Birds of a Feather sessions and their times are requested by attendees. The meetups are not endorsed or organized by SCALE. As Gus3 mentioned as a non-profit we are limited in what political maters we can become involved with.

If you have interested in this or another BoF / Meetup and would like to move it earlier please do reach out to the e-mail address on our website. I'm sure the team organizing BoF sessions would be happy to accomodate you.

how does the non-profit status limit the involvement here?

is this a legal limitation? shouldn't the involvement depend on the goals of the non-profit? (that is, a non-profit should be able to get involved in political issues when these issues relate to the goals of the non-profit)

greetings, eMBee.

Having gone to SCALE every year since 5x and having become friends with many of the organizers I can tell you that the SOPA Birds of a Feather (BoF) Session, or any of them for that matter are no afterthought. The entire Expo takes months to plan out.

Oh and I am going this year too..;-)

Serious 1st: @mbaehrlxer, I think you have an excellent point. OTOH, I think that everyone can see from SCALE's main page that its sponsors are Google, Facebook, and O'Reilly..... IIRC, ALL THREE of these sponsors are definitely anti-SOPA! Another key sponsor is GoDaddy.com which WAS in the past pro-SOPA, but now at least "declares itself" to be fully anti-SOPA just like these other three.

On a MUCH lighter note 2nd, here is a joke for SCALE's Friday sessions:

Did y'all know that Texan Congressman Lamar Smith's grandkid had to make a PIPA and afterwards just plain forgot to wash his/her little paws with SOPA?? As punishment, Grandpaw Smith then kips hisn grandchile from goin' on the Internayet for a full day, just so's that the chile jes cayunt copy hisn/hern homework assanmint stret frim thosa darn cahpeeriyat-infringin' Weekeepeedia devils!!

GoDaddy.com is a SCALE sponsor? I guess I won't ever be attending any SCALE expos. There aren't many corporations more evil than GoDaddy, and for SCALE to accept their sponsorship is absolutely disgusting.

GoDaddy was pro-SOPA until the word got out, and it cost them a HUGE number of customers practically overnight.

@gus - Supposedly 100000+ domains... that's quite a hefty amount of revenue. People are driven by money, I guess. Losing any more domains would mean a cut in Warren Adelman's elephant-slaying holidays.
