The author starts by talking about people who run GNU/Linux and offers a backup solution for all of us: Ubuntu Tweak. Everything in the article from that point on assumes each and every Linux users runs Ubuntu (or perhaps a very close cousin) and it just isn't so. These articles have gotten to the point that I just plain find them irritating. |

+1 there, caitlyn. In a big way . . . . |

Well the author of the article is an Ubuntu user. |

That's all well and good tracyanne, but you don't know that until he mentions that in his bio at the end. |

I was being facetious |

I feel caitlyn's pain. I'm sick to death of Ubuntu-specific articles even though I'm a casual, recreational user of it. I only use Ubuntu around other friends who do it, and I never transport it in my car. I think a large part of this frustration could be cured with some simple grammar changes: Quoting:If you want to backup your precious desktop settings, you should try Ubuntu Tweak. ...would be more effective, informative and less irritating if written as: Quoting:If you want to backup your precious desktop settings and happen to be using Ubuntu (or one of its spin-offs), you should try Ubuntu Tweak. |

I'm actually not sure how well it works on a non Unity desktop, or if it provides anything useful to a non Unity user. |

It does provide usefulness beyond Unity. It's included (along with the kitchen sink) by default in Ultimate Edition, which uses gnome classic. UT alters many settings beyond Unity or even gnome, but seems overall to be a rather kludgy way of changing things - the UI is a mess. As for the topic, shouldn't the term "Ubuntu-Tweak" in the title have been a clue that this was aimed at Ubuntu users? I mean, I agree that the article could have benefited from better grammar/clarity regarding intended use of the software at hand, but it IS called Ubuntu-Tweak after all... |
