Apple does not have the tablet all to itself, but how do the various Android devices actually stack up against the iPad?

Survey reveals a third of people who own Android-based smartphones would rather have an iPhone, while on 7% of iPhone owners would rather swap for an Android handset. Of course, like all such surveys this one is not without fault.

You would think that the 'Android kernel' is full of holes reading the headlines over the week, following the publication of the Coverity scan report. However, you cannot help but wonder how many of the headline writers actually read the report. It seems that all is not as it seems.

It's interesting, for sure, but Google Chrome OS as a game changer? No way! Everything from assuming people will want another Apple-alike 'buy the hardware to get the OS' model to thinking the average user is ready to surrender a PC paradigm for a cloud-based existence is wide of the mark. Google would appear to have got this one about as wrong as it got Google Answers or Google Lively. Remember them? No, thought not...

Please don't shoot the messenger, but all is not well in Firefox land. According to one new report, Firefox is responsible for some 44% of all the browser vulnerabilities that were reported during the first six months of 2009 and that's far more problematical than Internet Explorer.

Odd isn't it, how Microsoft kicked up a fuss when Google announced the Chrome plugin for Internet Explorer on the grounds that it could make the browser more insecure. Indeed, it went as far as to suggest that it doubled the potential surface area for malware and scripted attacks. Yet, amazingly, Microsoft sees no such problem with installing a plugin into the Firefox browser. What's more it is installed without asking the permission of the user and, he says with more than a hint of irony, it left Firefox vulnerable to a drive-by exploit.

Can anyone beat Microsoft when it comes to churning out insecure products? Ladies and gentleman, may I introduce you to Adobe.

There ain't no such thing as a free Windows 7 upgrade. At least that's what it is starting to look like for the majority of people, despite the 'free upgrade' vouchers that are being handed out with new computers as part of the Windows 7 Upgrade Option scheme.

It doesn't run Linux, in fact it uses 900 Dekatron gas-filled tubes each capable of holding just a single digit in memory, using paper tape for both input and program storage. But The National Museum of Computing in England is restoring it and offering geeks the chance to own a share in the project. Which is kind of cool.

Most people welcomed the news that the Sony PlayStation 3 was slimming down, both in physical size and in terms of off the shelf pricing. The Linux crowd are not so impressed however.

So Microsoft is going to decide how big a netbook can be to be a netbook then? Anything larger than 10.2" doesn't get Windows 7 Starter Edition, must pay more for another version that will run even slower on a netbook. Could be good news for Linux, as OEM XP licenses expire and Windows 7 becomes the only alternative.
