If you have ever tried to access a Windows box remotely, it is very likely you suffered a lot of frustration. Remote desktop works great… but only when you have a stable broadband connection to your remote machine. In GNU/Linux you (as usual) have a choice – you can connect remotely, both graphically and text-based (for maximum performance) using at least a few methods described in the article.

Those problems could be gradually overcome in a relatively short period of time but a question arises: What will happen if the paranoia wins?

  • polishlinux.org; By riklaunim (Posted by michux on Jan 16, 2007 3:01 AM EDT)

Dreamlinux is an operating system that boots from a Live-CD with the option to install on a hard drive as well. Dreamlinux is not just another Live-CD based on Debian, it’s not another distro coming with XFCE 4.4. Dreamlinux 2.2 MME is a polished multimedia system from which Xubuntu developers could really learn a lot and which has the potential to demolish Windows Multimedia Center as far as the functionality is concerned.

PolishLinux.org has a review of Frugalware 0.5, the latest release of this independent Linux distribution. From the article: "It's not as good for the newcomers as openSUSE or Mandriva since there are not so many graphical wizards and tools included. On the other hand, the system is fast and simple, offers a great package manager, large software repository and decent multimedia support[...] All in all, Frugalware is a very nice distro and it may be a good choice for a power user's desktop."

  • PolishLinux.org; By Hadret (Posted by michux on Sep 27, 2006 10:23 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups: GNOME, Linux
Recently I've been looking for an audio player that would resemble the famous Windows player called Foobar 2000. I have found a lot of clones, and just a few original applications. Mesk audio player was among the latter. Mesk left a good impression on me, especially thanks to its smart way of presenting playlists and the generally appealing interface. The only thing stopped me from leaving Quod Libet, in favor of Mesk was the lack of tray integration.
