LiVES is a feature-full and very powerful video editor written in GTK 3, with support for over 50 formats, rendering effects, and real-time video capturing possibilities.

Picking up one entry for each category was no easy task because applications are divided between GTK and Qt, and there are programs that run in the console and do their job perfectly and are more lightweight than a GUI application.

With Ubuntu 14.04 closing in to the release date, which is set for April 17th, I took Lubuntu for a spin from the daily live ISO image. There was a time when office compatibility was a bit of a problem on Linux, but with the latest office suites out there available for Linux, this is not an issue anymore. The applications here mimic MS Excel’s behavior, so switching to one of them should be pretty straightforward. Exporting and importing to and from MS Excel format works as well, and there aren’t many compatibility issues (however, the native format these programs use is the OpenDocument Spreadsheet (ODS) format.

XMBC is a home theater application which runs in fullscreen, has a beautiful, modern interface, support for pictures, music and video collections and playlists, television and radio.

Earlier today, Jane Silber, the CEO of Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, announced in an official blog post that the Ubuntu One service will be closed, and those who have subscriptions will have their money refunded. This is some sad news for those of us who are using this service.
