One business that relies heavily on open source software is Genuitec, the company that produces the proprietary subscription-based MyEclipse interactive development environment. Low-cost MyEclipse adds functionality to Eclipse, an open source application development software framework. Genuitec co-founder and Vice President of Technology Todd Williams says his company is able to keep prices affordable because it avoided using venture capital money, and because Genuitec itself is built completely on open source.

MySQL is poised to attract keen attention from F1000s running mission-critical apps. A meaner, faster version of MySQL, dubbed solidDB for MySQL, is now in general availability (GA). Ambitious open source vendor Red Hat is on the last leg of its race to push 70 per cent of its business through the channel and is gearing up to launch an additional partner accreditation. Access is finally shipping its next-generation Linux-based operating system and development kit for mobile devices. The company is showing off version 1.0 of Access Linux Platform (ALP), and various tools and high-end mobile applications processor support packages, at the 3GSM World Congress this week in Barcelona.

The KateOS team today announced the first beta release of its live CD edition of KateOS 3.2, which now includes a graphical system installer, the team said in the release announcement. Kate OS uses a 2.6.18 Linux kernel and the default Xfce desktop.

Sangoma Technologies, a company that specializes in open source PBX solutions announced Monday that is has been contracted by Pakistan-based integrator and consultancy Convergence (News - Alert) to provide an open source telecommunications platform. Convergence will use Sangoma’s technology to develop the platform for Worldcall Telecom Limited and Barraqtel, both based in Pakistan. The two companies have been looking for an open source platform that their technical teams can easily manage.

LOS ANGELES -- The fifth annual Southern California Linux Expo last weekend at the Westin Los Angeles Airport Hotel brought in more than 1,200 paying attendees. SCALE featured a wide range of talks on topics from Inkscape to OpenNMS, and an exhibit hall with about 70 projects and companies from the Linux and open source community. While the quality of the talks varied, the show was a good opportunity to meet and learn from other Linux users.
