Solid-State Drives: Get One Already!
At a recent gathering of like-minded Linux users, I learned that many of my peers hadn't actually made the move to SSDs yet......it boiled down to three main concerns: reliability; compatability with Linux; and whether an SSD would make much of a difference. Luckily, these three concerns are based either on misunderstandings, outdated data, exaggeration or are just not correct.
Decking Out Linux for the Senior Set
Every once in a while here in the Linux blogosphere, a topic will suddenly pop up in multiple separate, unconnected places and take on a life of its own. Perhaps it's some unseen cosmic force guiding Linux geeks' conversations in the same direction, or perhaps it's just Linux Girl's proclivity for drawing connections. In any case, it happened again earlier this month.

Adding fuel to the debate over the treatment of women in tech, Julie Ann Horvath, a developer at GitHub, has stormed out of her job, accusing the company of ignoring harassment in the workplace. How Openstack stores data in the cloud with Cinder
Without solid storage, the data of the cloud lives only in the moment. Within OpenStack, storage comes in two flavors: object storage, which stores chunks of information, and block storage, which is more analogous to the traditional idea of a disk drive image. Block storage in OpenStack is handled by Cinder, which provides the infrastructure for managing volumes and sharing them with the other components in OpenStack.

A 3D printed hand brings the crowd to their feet
Earlier this year, I shared my story about open source designs and my 3D printed prosthetic hand to a room of 4,600+ at Intel’s Annual International Sales Conference in Las Vegas. I joined Jon Schull on stage, the founder of e-NABLE, an online group dedicated to open source 3D printable assistive devices.
The reaction we got from our talk was unexpected—and it was one of the most awkward and exhilarating experiences of my life.

Makers are the new industrial revolution
Following up on the recent review of the Maker's Manifesto, I ran across the book Makers: The New Industrial Revolution by Chris Anderson. Anderson is a former Editor in Chief of Wired and no stranger to the economic paradoxes of peer-production and open source. He has written about both in previous books The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business Is Selling Less of More and Free: The Future of a Radical Price.
In his most recent book, Anderson examines the historical parallels between the Maker movement and the second Industrial Revolution,
Crew assembles three open source vehicles over lunch
When you think about automobile assembly, usually it's giant factories, robotic arms, and showers of sparks from welding machines that come to mind. But Carlo De Micheli describes his first experience at the OSVehicle project, when three of their Tabby prototype cars were put together by hand during the span of a lunch break.
Today OSVehicle is establishing relations with partners, designers, makers, and manufacturers in 70+ countries and on six continents to bring open source development to the automotive industry.
