The developers at Opened Hand have released a pair of lightweight, low-resource applications for calendaring and address book management. They were designed to run on small embedded systems such as Nokia's 770 Internet Tablet and the Sharp Zaurus -- but that doesn't mean you can't use them on your desktop Linux box just as easily.
Today, as everybody kicks up their heels at the offices of PC manufacturers worldwide celebrating the 25th anniversary of the desktop computer known as the IBM PC, one wonders what Steve Jobs and the crew over at Apple Computer must be thinking.
The driver source code released for the Intel 965 Graphics chipset recently isn't as open as first thought. Keith Packard posted a reply on the linux-kernel mailing list detailing what parts were not available.
If you want to try KToon quickly and without dealing with library dependencies, then you should try our LiveCD. You just have to download the iso image, burn it, and then boot your machine from cdrom.
The Agency of French-speaking Universities (AUF), representing 616 French-speaking higher education institutions globally, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), and Canonical Ltd have announced the world's first Ubuntu certification in French.
Why should you market your free and open source software (FOSS) project? After all, your project isn't selling anything. Besides, programmers notoriously don't get along with marketers. Yet a little marketing makes sense for many projects. Listing your project on Freshmeat and SourceForge.net is a good start, but greater efforts let users and organizations know that your code is available, so that they can start using it.
What exactly is meant by document portability? Does it mean that a document created in one application can be viewed using a different application on another operating system? Does it mean that the document can be viewed and edited within another application on the same or another OS platform? Or does it simply mean that you can be sure that the document you create today can be read in the future using proprietary products from the same software vendor?

Open source software (OSS) is gaining ground in UK education, reveals a report from OSS Watch, the national OSS advisory service run out of Oxford University, with over three quarters of colleges and universities considering open source options in IT procurement exercises.
Apple’s support for open source is not dead after all, despite a slew of reports to the contrary, including my own. Apple open source lives. On Monday, in a single email on its Darwin-dev mailing list, Apple Open Source Product Manager Ernest Prabhakar posted the following:
"As of today, we are posting buildable kernel sources for Intel-based Macs alongside the usual PowerPC (and other Intel) sources, starting with Mac OS X 10.4.7. We regret the delay in readying the new kernel for release, and thank you for your patience."
So many open source projects depend on MySQL that it's almost impossible for administrators and other open source enthusiasts to avoid working with at least one MySQL database. MySQL's command line interface is easy enough to use, but if you don't feel like reaching for a five-pound MySQL reference book or Googling for proper SQL syntax, phpMyAdmin is a great alternative to learning MySQL commands by heart.
In 2003 and 2004, Jeff Schroeder served in the Iraq war, flying a tiny remote control spy plane and servicing Unix and Linux systems on the battlefield. Schroeder learned a lot of technology in the desert, and now that his time in the Army is over, he's busy working as a Web administrator for Comair Airlines, and writing utility scripts for Ubuntu, his favorite distribution. He believes Linux is going to "take over the world."
This year in Dublin will host the annual meeting of the KDE community, and it will be a great occasion for developers to meet, code, hold bug-fixing sessions, discussions and much more.
Open-source software stack vendor OpenLogic Inc. today unveiled its OpenLogic JumpStart program, which is designed to help companies better organize and plan their use of open-source software alongside proprietary applications.
Many CIOs are now implementing Linux and open source software as policy within their organizations, a sign of how deeply those technologies have penetrated the enterprise, analysts say.
Microsoft Internet Explorer has substantially lost ground in recent months to Firefox within the APCMag.com user community. A whopping 37% of users are now browsing with Firefox. Another six per cent use Apple Safari.
As you may recall from my last entry, I exchanged my cable box from a Scientific Atlanta 8000HD to a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD. The latter, new box continues to output a signal from the cable connection even if I have it in HDTV mode. It probably also continues to output AVI and S-Video. This finally opened up a way for me to use my cable box with a MythTV box. Thanks to a serious (and mysterious) spinal injury (I say mysterious because I haven't figured out how I did the damage), I can only work on the project for a half hour at a time, at most. I have discovered some interesting things in those short segments.
Mozilla has long relied on its community to help it identify bugs within applications. Now it has another ally in the fight against bugs. Internetnews.com has learned that Mozilla will announce that it is using Coverity's source code analysis software, which extends beyond the confines of Coverity's Department of Homeland Security grant to improve open source software code quality.
One of the principal advantages of Emacs over competing editors is how flexible and customizable it is. In fact, in several other "Emacs tips" columns, you may find references to customizing your setup. It's a big topic, so this is a quick start guide to the fundamentals: the .emacs file and basic customization techniques.
Sensitive information that only certain people need to have web access to must be secured. If sensitive or proprietary information is located on your web site and you do not want public access to this information, you must password it. An obscure file name with no links to it anywhere on the site will not keep the information secure. Security through obscurity does not work.
