Always a popular operating system, Linux has been getting a lot more buzz lately. All of this new news has helped to propel Linux operating systems to the public eye, and awareness of this system’s existence is now starting to spread beyond technology enthusiasts and computer coders.

Mageia is a distribution forked from Mandriva some time ago. That's not a secret. Also, it's not a secret that Mandriva's preferred desktop environment was KDE. Even the fact that the latest version Mandriva 2011 has only a KDE option proves that position. At the same time, Mageia continued the old Mandriva strategy, and released their distribution with two options: KDE and GNOME. I have only tried Mageia KDE so far, and had no chance to try GNOME. I finally got a chance to try Mageia 2 GNOME myself.

I was disappointed after my first acquaintance with ROSA Marathon 2012 KDE. Honestly, ROSA Marathon 2012 LXDE was a real surprise for me! What can I say in general? I think ROSA team showed us this time that they have a big future.

Different operating systems give you different degrees of freedom, different degrees of access to knowledge of “what is inside”. And, what is more important for a non-technical user, they give you different user interfaces.

Many computer geeks have always held Linux in high regard. They endlessly talk about its stability and security features. For many years people talked about how Linux may eventually take over in the future, but the OS is yet to take off as the leading operating systems. There has been a lot of debate as to why this OS has never really taken off. There are many things that programmers, computer experts, users and geeks in general have failed to agree on. However, there are a number of things that have affected its success.

I had hit a wall. I was to sit with a laptop that I knew had power and strengths; that deserved to shine but couldn't be unlocked to its potential. Only in my dreams, I thought.

To be honest, I was slightly scared by the previous not-so-good experience of a Mageia upgrade described by Gene on his ERACC blog. The second option for me would be to make a fresh install, which I could always revert to. I had so little to loose that the decision was easily made.

Marketing doesn't always sit that comfortably with the spirit of open source and freedom, but it's something that is severely lacking in the Linux world.
