Embeddable open source database goes into beta
A project to create a lightweight, embeddable database is beta testing its second release. Firebird 2.0 features derived tables, support for "execute block," increased table sizes, improved index code, and numerous other improvements. Beta kits are available for Linux on i686, i686-NPTL, and AMD64, as well as Windows.

You can crab all you want about vendor-sponsored research, such as the many studies that Microsoft has sponsored directly or endorsed as it tries to fight off the onslaught of Linux, but it does one very practical thing. The heated competition and even more heated words are, of course, amusing, but the truth is, the analytical weapons that the Windows allies and the Linux allies are deploying are getting more sophisticated. And this is a good thing for customers, even if it makes life difficult for commercial Linux distributors and Microsoft.

Ibm Considers Free Distribution of DB2
Although IBM already supports a free open source database engine called Cloudscape which provides a migration path to DB2, IBM feels that a free starter edition of DB2 could attract developers that would otherwise use an open source solution. A free DB2 version could also possibly prevent potential IBM customers from adopting the proprietary database solutions distributed by IBM's chief competitors in the database market. Microsft and Oracle both offer their own free starter editions: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, and Oracle Database XE.

The city of Paris is accelerating its move to free and open-source software as part of a strategy to reduce its dependence on suppliers. Tiny USB hard drive dongle runs Linux
Tom's Hardware has reviewed a USB dongle based on a miniature 1-inch hard drive. The Zinside H2 is based on a Cornice 3GB "Storage Element" drive, and comes with a Ubuntu Linux installation CD that the publication used to install the older "Warty Warthog" release, creating a portable but slow Linux desktop.
