Scott McNealy, chairman and chief executive of Sun Microsystems, has extended an open invitation to Microsoft and Red Hat to join the Java Community Process (JCP). Speaking at the 2004 JavaOne conference in San Francisco he also stressed that Sun, which has struggled financially lately, is not going away.

Linux is not yet the dominant server OS in terms of units deployed or units shipped. Microsoft still has the lion's share of the market by all reasonable estimations. It is true that Linux market share figures are likely to be inaccurate because there is no easy way to count new Linux servers. The major problem is that it is possible to estimate those servers that come with Linux loaded, but not possible to count servers that were running something else (Windows or SCO UNIX or whatever) that were repurposed.

AIB is to move 7,500 desktop users in its branch network to Sun's Java Desktop, a move that bodes well for open source software.

The CE Linux Forum (CELF) today announced that it has released its first CELF Specification and Reference Implementation. This release represents another step toward optimizing Linux for use in consumer electronic (CE) products, consistent with the goals and vision of the CELF organization.
