I'm sometimes surprised at the complex solutions administrators come up with to keep out users whenever that course becomes necessary when a simple, built-in solution to their problem already exists. In this article, we'll look at a few different mechanisms used to keep out intruders either temporarily, or on a more permanent basis.

Music store bangs the drum for free software
Online music site Independent Music Online promotes various free, libre open source software (FLOSS) projects on banner graphics throughout its site, including Mozilla Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, and jlGui. And not only does this music service "walk the walk," it also "talks the talk": Independent Music Online itself is thoroughly powered by FLOSS. The Ind-Music.com servers run Mandriva, Apache, and PHP, and all of its music is in the popular, free (and digital rights management-free) Ogg Vorbis audio format.
Tux found alive and well in Planet Penguin Racer
What happened to Tux? Soon after Sunspirestudios took Tux Racer commercial in 2001, our beloved open source Tux seemed to vanish from the program. Did he lose control and fly off a cliff? Was he a victim of a kidnaping plot from Redmond? No matter -- thanks to the PlanetPenguin Racer (PPRacer) project, Tux is back with a vengeance, in a significant upgrade over what the open source Tux Racer offers.
LinuxWorld Conference and Expo - Wrapup
I've said this before, and so have many others: The semi-annual LinuxWorld Conference and Expo has become a business-to-business gathering. Last week's edition, held in the west building of San Francisco's Moscone Center, had more exhibitors than last year -- about 200. It had the same number of attendees -- about 11,000. But most of the exhibitors I asked said the show was better for them than last year because the quality of attendees was better -- at least from their point of view. And there was still the "meeting ground" aspect, centered on the Dot-Org area that was located well away from the main show floor. This still makes LinuxWorld worthwhile for those whose primary interest is learning about new advances in the GUIs and other software that keep GNU/Linux evolution strong and steady.

DistroWatch Weekly: Gentoo Installer, SUSE Linux 10.0 Beta 1, live CD resources, BLAG Linux And GNU
Welcome to this year's 33rd issue of DistroWatch Weekly. We shall start with a quick look at the first alpha release of the Gentoo Installer project - the first Gentoo live CD which boots into a full GNOME desktop and which can be installed to a hard disk with -- believe it or not -- a mouse! Then we'll talk briefly about the first beta release of SUSE Linux 10.0 and introduce two web sites specialising in bringing you news and information about the many live CD projects available today. Our featured distributions of the week is BLAG Linux And GNU, a single CD Fedora-based distribution with a home entertainment bias. Happy reading!

Creating reports with Agata Report
In his book Inside Relational Databases, Mark Whitehorn writes, "One golden rule of design is not to ask the question of what information do I want to put into the table, but rather what information do I want to get out of the table." An equally important question is how to get information out of the table. Some database management systems include tools for creating queries and reports, while others, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite, require that you use third-party tools. One such tool that receives high marks is Agata Report.

It takes patience to find the best solitaire
One of the original Windows selling points was that it included a version of solitaire, the centuries-old, time-filling card game. Later, in the mid-1990s, several critics told me Linux would never catch on unless it, too, included solitaire. Now, of course, solitaire has been part of the KDE and GNOME desktops for so long that most users can't remember not having it. So okay, everyone has solitaire, which leads us to the burning question of the day: "Which has the best built-in version of solitaire: Windows XP, GNOME, or KDE?"

Review: Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder
Most set-top digital personal video recorders (PVRs) cost anywhere from several hundred to more than a thousand dollars. The Neuros MPEG-4 Recorder is a much lower-priced PVR, but the reduced cost carries its own price: it can't do nearly as much as its more expensive hard drive- and DVD-based competitors, such as TiVo, ReplayTV, and UltimateTV.
LinuxWorld Conference and Expo - Day 2
SAN FRANCISCO - 10 Aug 2005 - The second day of LinuxWorld passed without any fistfights breaking out between vendors, although there are rumors of rancor between Sun and IBM over a modification of OpenOffice.org that IBM is passing out on CDs. There are more hardware vendors than last year, with bigger and splashier displays. And in honor of the late, great San Francisco newspaper columnist Herb Caen, I will end this paragaph and some other ones with three dots...

Review: Xandros Desktop 3.0 Business Edition
Xandros Business Edition provides a desktop environment that looks and feels much like a better-looking Windows 2000. Unlike Windows, Xandros is easy to install and maintain, and it doesn't come with all of the security flaws and virus vulnerabilities that Windows has. As an added bonus, Xandros Business Edition includes the full edition of CrossOver Office 4.2 (other editions of Xandros include only a 30-day trial). That means that if there is a major Windows software package that you can't live without, chances are you will be able to install and run it on Xandros through CrossOver. In short, Xandros is now ready to eliminate Windows from corporate desktop computers.
Book review: The Book of Postfix
Like many things in the Unix, GNU, and BSD worlds, the Postfix mail transport agent (MTA) is powerful but difficult to configure optimally. With basic instructions and a couple of hours (or more) to test the configuration, you can probably make Postfix work, but how do you make it work to its full potential? How do you make it more secure? How do you make it get rid of spam? How do you configure it for complex situations that involve multiple servers, email addresses, email groups, and domains? That's what "The Book of Postfix" is for.
