Could server breach delay Gnome?

The Gnome Project said Tuesday that its servers have apparently been breached, potentially delaying the latest release of its desktop system for Linux.

SVG and its Path into the Linux Desktop

Computer graphics have long been dominated by bitmapped images. However, the free software community has taken an innovative lead by adopting scalable graphic formats on its desktops. In this article I cover the history and rise of scalable graphics on the desktop from my viewpoint - a proponent of its use in the GNOME platform. This article mostly focuses on SVG's progress from a GNOME viewpoint, both because GNOME has progressed the furthest and because I am most knowledgable with GNOME's efforts. I will however mention major landmarks in other projects where appropriate.

Creating a Custom initrd Image on Debian

I wanted to be able to alter the order in which my SCSI device drivers were loaded at startup, so I looked into using initrd images with Debian. I documented a procedure to quickly get up and running using Debian's initrd-tools when working with SCSI devices. Hopefully, useful to others as well.

For better or for worse, Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) is a wildly popular way of exchanging information. On Windows and Mac OS, most people create PDF files by first creating a PostScript file and then using Adobe Acrobat Distiller to generate a PDF. Linux, however, has no version of Distiller. There are a number of ways to create a PDF in Linux, but one of the most popular methods is to use a utility called ps2pdf.

Novell Turns To Open Source To Regain Relevance

Novell's past missteps include investing in server-based technology to the exclusion of the desktop and attempting to buy its way into new markets without a plan for integration, as it did a decade ago after buying WordPerfect Corp. and QuattroPro from Borland. Novell chairman and CEO Jack Messman sums up the disconnect between his company and the market over the past few years. "We felt we were still around," he said at a news conference. "But many of our customers thought we'd gone dark in many respects."
