IBM puts up incentives to move SMBs to Linux

When IBM Corp. announced in January an initiative at LinuxWorld Conference and Expo to encourage Windows NT shops to migrate to Linux, it did so with 20 partners in tow. In the five weeks since the Linux love-fest in New York City, IBM says it has more than doubled the number of partners in the program and attributes it to the rapid ascension of the operating system into the consciousness of the enterprise.

Absoft Announces Fortran Compiler for Linux on Opteron

Absoft Corporation today announced general availability of its Fortran 95 compiler v9.0 for the AMD Opteron/Athlon 64-bit processors running Linux. Absoft's new compiler is optimized for features of the AMD64 architecture and can generate both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. Industry standard benchmarks indicate up to a 35% performance improvement over previous releases.

UK gov backs 1 million pound blueprint for open source switchers

The UK government has announced funding for a 'third force' open source migration project. A group of local authorities led by Rossendale has won 502,500 pounds of matched funding (i.e. the project is worth double that) for an examination of "the issues associated with migration to Open Source," involving a justification of and implementation of open source in three English local authorities, and the production of a report.

Using a commercial TLS protocol testing suite the OpenSSL Project discovered three vulnerabilities in the OpenSSL toolkit. EnGarde Secure Linux is vulnerable to two of these these three Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerabilities.

The first bug occurs during SSL/TLS handshake in the function do_change_cipher_spec() due to a NULL pointer assignment. The second bug affects openssl version 0.9.7* only with Kerberos cipher-suite enabled and can be triggered during SSL/TLS handshake too.

Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's largest automaker, and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. have adopted a Linux cluster system built by International Business Machines Corp., the world's largest computer maker, for vehicle crash simulation testing and analysis, IBM Korea said on Wednesday.
