"This return to Microsoft has consequences and open issues, both for Open Source advocates and for the City of Pesaro, that have had little or no coverage at all so far"
Hacker proves with Open Data that Microsoft license costs don’t matter
no, not really. Still this graph is a better starting point to discuss these issues than certain slogans. And also proves something important about Open Data
How to use clip art in Gnuplot charts
In previous posts, I've discussed how to use Gnuplot for time-based data and conditional plotting. This time, I'd like to introduce another class of potential core elements for your charts, and that's generic clip art. I'll explain step-by-step, in the simplest possible manner, how I plotted a histogram, and then I'll give you some directions on how to proceed from there.
Shall we waste twelve more years promoting Free office suites instead of open office formats?
Twelve (TWELVE!!!) years ago I asked OpenOffice users “Are you advocating OO correctly”. Six years ago I said the same things in a different format. A couple of weeks ago, I came across a perfect proof that that kind of advocay IS right, but so far has been never practiced enough.
The actual advantages of OpenDocument
A Free-as-in-Freedom, highly structured, metadata rich, application independent XML file format like OpenDocument can finally offer two huge advantages to all computer users and to Society as a whole....
Yes, the percloud is “just” another Gnu/Linux distro. That’s why it’s a good idea
"The average Internet user only needs stuff ready for individual online activities. The percloud is the first member of this NEW CLASS of Gnu/Linux distributions."
100% Free Software, really useable alternative to Facebook, Gmail etc..
“PERsonal/PERmanent, peer-2-peer Cloud” or percloud for short, are temporary names for an easy to use alternative to centrally-controlled, privately-owned cloud computing services, to be built by properly integrating as much existing Free Sofware as possible
Girl Scouts, other equal opportunity employers and… software discrimination
what's the relationship of Scout organizations with Free Software, almost 10 years after Stallman's online exchange with the World Scout Bureau?
FOSS alternatives to Apple, Facebook & C already exist. Shall we package them?
Installing all this Free SW on a virtual Linux server you get one single blob of living bits that will let you do everything you need online, with all the privacy you need and NO fear that some “landlord” kicks you out. Why isn’t everybody doing it? Well, simply because there is NO INTEGRATION AT ALL all among all those FOSS programs...
Usability of Free SW Desktops: a (still valid?) rant from 2002
In 2001/2002 I wrote a tutorial on how to configure Gnu/Linux desktops on limited hardware. Before that, I had also written down my own, very personal motivations for playing with that kind of tricks, to clarify what itches I would try to scratch. I rediscovered that 2002 file this morning. Reading it again, in these days of Unity, tablets and touchscreens, made me think it may be fun to share it. Remember when it was written, judge by yourself and let me know.
Is Sierra Leone, without Internet and Free Software, just a knowledge landfill?
Is it possible, in those countries, to study today the computer science of yesterday? Is it useful? To whom? Is it useful just to leave these people in a state of “submission”? The point is, such practices do not provide knowledge that is useful to improve one’s life. What if they invested in Linux and Internet access instead? Why does that “polytechnic” has no server and no Internet access?
How and why to use KAlarm from the command line
Here are a few ways of using KAlarm to automate and customize alerts on your Linux desktop from the command line
Who should we really thank for command-line Wikipedia searches?
Lxer.com is an aggregator of (mostly) reader-submitted news about Linux and Free/Open Source software. On March 27th, 2012, Lxer.com published this news...
FTA Community demands TradePub to correct inappropriate use of its FOSS course books
Here's a case to study for everybody who cares about Free Software teaching, open learning and open publishing: the Free Technology Academy (FTA) publishes online with open licenses all its Linux/FOss related courseware. Everybody can download them for free, no questions asked. TradePub gave the links to such downloads ONLY to people who provided personal information, then reused for advertising, profiling and other purposes. What to do? Please support the FTA formal request to stop such practices
Love your neighbour as you love yourself. And choose your software accordingly
I would like to focus on the “love your neighbor” commandment and how does it apply to software; specifically, how does it apply to one’s choices of which software to use?... Free software (free as in free speech) fulfils this requirement
Can you DEMAND my name to give me a public link to a free FOSS book?
here is a **Linux website** that demands people's name, phone number and other personal information as a NECESSARY condition to download, as a "Free Offer"... a CC-licensed software manual (and other books about Linux) that is directly available online on its home page
Who can afford Open Source?
I just came across an italian programmer who says that he adores FOSS but can't afford to write it. With his permission, I published his complete explanation on my website.
Tutorial: put your bookmarks online with SemanticScuttle
How to install and use a feature-rich open source program that allows you to store and organize online bookmarks on your own server
It’s time to bring FPGA (open) design to the masses
today FPGAs powerful enough to run Linux and implement many types of useful integrated circuits are much cheaper than a few years ago, and the knowledge to use them is much more accessible. That's why it's time to bring FPGA design to the masses
GPLv3 is great to promote open innovation, but not enough to protect communication rights
(this is a summary of some of the reasons why TFF Founder Rufo Guerreschi and others started the UVT project): A lot of great work has been done in promotion and branding of GNU GPLv3. However, I think GPLv3 cannot promise freedoms in digital communications to ordinary users, and adequately protect their constitutional communication rights while using telematics communications.
