Less than two years after our initial launch, LXer has become a top news site in the Linux community. Continuing progress allows us to provide services to authors wishing to publish original material. Click to read more about the announcement.

Before I launched LXer, I saw an important need for a news site:

  1. Driven by an editor who knew and cared deeply about the Linux community.

  2. Had a minimum of advertisements, and the few that it had would be relevant to Linuxers. Related to that the site would have a clean and simple layout without any fancy graphics or formatting.

  3. Frequently updated with useful and interesting stories, announcements, reviews, security alerts and editorials.

  4. Had a plethora of useful features to make access to the news easy in a variety of ways.

  5. Provided easy community participation - discussion forums and moderated story submission.

  6. Had an open database - with news (including external links) available in XML format and readily accessible to anyone who wanted it.

I decided I was up to the challenge, and the above became my working mission statement. I felt I had competitors as well as complementary sites with which to work, and in the months that followed the mission proved itself worthwhile. LXer has met and surpassed my goals.

Since launching LXer in January 2004, the site has progressed to a point that we need additional people with the same commitment and vision to go forward. Earlier this summer, several subscribers joined me in the sorting, posting, editing and selecting news for the site. We have also had a number of people contribute articles and have a repository of LXer originated features.

As of today, I will assume the title of Publisher to make room for additional staffing of LXer. We will also formalize our features area so that people can submit articles, reviews, news and other original materials to the site. Tom Adelstein will work with us as Editor-in-Chief to organize this effort. Tom will continue work he started last year writing articles, continue to select materials to add to the Newswire and work with authors who wish to publish on LXer.

You can find the Features section on the top navigation bar of the web site and in the story type of an article. If you see LXer Features in an article's description, then it is original content. You may notice other subtle changes in the site as time passes.

If you would like to contribute as an author, editor and/or help with news postings, please contact Tom at LXer.com. As usual, you can also contact me with regards to anything about the site.

Thank you for participating and making LXer one of the top Linux news sites on the planet.
