IBM Offers Migration Guide for Linux as Free Download
Solaris to Linux Migration: A Guide for System Administrators helps system administrators who want to move their in-house code to faster, better, less costly Linux servers. I have met government agencies and enterprise customers who have wanted to discuss this topic on more than a few occassions. I typically sit in on discussions where Linux runs everything except something from Sun that hasn't made it through migration. "We'd like to get off this old expensive Sun equipment, but we just can't." Well, plenty of people have, but it required an ISV to port their in-house proprietary code to Linux. I saw it happen when American Management Systems ported Momentum their financial management solution to Red Hat for the US Judiciary. Of course, that's a rather large customer and saying no to the Administrative Office of the US Court may have raised some eyebrows. So, here's a resource that will allow people to make the switch. This book will work for in-house software projects, ISV's and people who have seen sales go down over the past three to four years and want to jump to the hottest server platform on the globe. IBM writes: The goal of this IBM Redbook is to provide a technical reference for IT systems administrators in organizations that are considering a migration from Solaris to Linux-based systems. You can visit IBM's web page and check out the contents, or download the book by clicking here. It's always nice to offer LXer readers a free book like this (especially when Jonathan Swartz tells people that IBM and HP equipment will be running Open Solaris). |
