  • Story Type: Reviews; Groups:
Yesterday I reviewed three classic first-person shooter games for Linux, Wolfenstein: ET, UT2004 and ioQuake3. Today I will continue with two other first-person shooter (FPS) games, natively available for Linux: Nexuiz and OpenArena. They both are currently maintained and the wonderful thing about them is that they all are completely open-source, free and usually available in all the major distributions.

Microsoft Joins Open Source Messaging Group

Microsoft said Friday that it has joined a group that's developing a standard for open source messaging software known as the Advanced Messaging and Queuing Protocol (AMQP). "By joining the AMQP Working Group, Microsoft is aiming to contribute to the development of the specification in ways that will best promote interoperability for existing market implementations and provide customers with increased choice," said Sam Ramji, Microsoft's senior director for platform development, in a statement.

BMW wants joint effort to develop open-source in-vehicle platform

BMW is developing an open-source platform for vehicle electronics. By taking the open-source approach, rather than using proprietary software, BMW aims to allow providers of infotainment services to develop plug-and-play applications. BMW is asking other automakers to join in its effort. But four other automakers that along with BMW took part in a panel discussion Tuesday at Convergence 2008, a conference on automotive electronics, are not as far along in their consideration of an open-source platform.

The Great 3G Letdown

On Friday morning, I gave 3G wireless another chance. Maybe it was looking a gift horse in the mouth. Faster is better, and we should be grateful companies are continuing to invest in the networks we all rely upon. But after all the hype and anticipation, third-generation wireless infrastructure has been underwhelming, in my experience

Ridiculous Resumes - Unix, Linux and everything in between

  • The Linux and Unix Menagerie; By Mike Tremell (Posted by eggi on Oct 26, 2008 4:53 AM CST)
  • Story Type: Humor; Groups: Community, Linux, Sun
This week, we're picking on the employees instead of the employers :) Last weekend, we poked fun at some of the insane want ads that companies put out when looking for IT talent. This week, to be fair, we're going to take a look at some of the goofy bloopers, funny blunders and (occasionally) serious bits of actual resumes that focus in on the unintentional humor that anyone who's ever had a part in the hiring process is familiar with.

What the High Priority Free Software Projects Should Be

The Free Software Foundation has been promoting a list of "high priority" free software projects, but are these projects really the highest priority project?

Debian Lenny comes with Iceweasel 3.0.3, which is actually Firefox with a changed name and a few minor changes. If you have Iceweasel 3.0.3 installed but want to test this new beta without changing anything to your system, just follow the steps below.

Microsoft makes mockery of interoperability

Microsoft needs to get rid of its chief IP lawyer and its patent strategy if it wants further efforts at interoperability to be taken seriously by open source vendors and users. In at least two interviews with IT publications this week, Horacio Gutierrez reaffirmed that the company intends to try and force open source companies to sign patent licensing deals or face lawsuits.

My Firefox 3 experience

As much as I like Opera 9.5, I have started using Firefox 3.0.3 as my default browser. It almost makes me feel guilty, because I really do like Opera. It’s a slick little browser that I still use it at times and who knows, I may go back to using it full time at a later date. However, Firefox 3 has won me over for the time being. Something my brother said sums it up. With Firefox 3, you can add as little or as much customization as you want or need and for me, that makes it a winner.

Linux incognito part two: Windows XP

For an awful lot of people their first encounter with a computer will invariably be Microsoft Windows. This straight away creates a barrier against considering alternate operating systems because they look different to what the user has been accustomed to. Here's how to paint a Windows facade over Linux and remove that obstacle.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory A true classic and one of the most played online first-person shooter games, Wolfenstein: ET was supposed to be released as a new mod for Return to Castle Wolfenstein, but the single-player part of the game was abandoned and it was released at no cost, as a standalone multiplayer game.

Wine 1.1.7 Review - First Steps of Direct3D 10 Implementation

Wine is the project which makes possible to run games like World of WarCraft, Counter-Strike, Half-Life 2, WarCraft III and so on. And Wine is also the project which makes possible for web developers to test how their web page is viewed under Internet Explorer. Not to mention hundreds of other applications which work very well or well enough with it.

Unix - What Is It? More Linux/Unix Humor

If the beginning bores you, jump to 3 minutes 5 seconds in. Hilarious :) For this week's attempt to find even more Linux, Unix and/or computer-related humour on the web, I ran across an entertaining 4 minutes of video called "Unix: What the heck is it?" It's attached to this post, below, but is also available on OrienteeringPro's YouTube Page.

Why is The Bizarre Cathedral licence "non-free"?

  • Free Software Magazine; By Ryan Cartwright (Posted by scrubs on Oct 25, 2008 5:06 PM CST)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Community
For the past 26 weeks I’ve been producing the Bizarre Cathedral strips for Free Software Magazine. Every one of them is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-commerical-Share Alike (BY-NC-SA) licence. Recently I’ve received a few pieces of mail saying this is a “non-free” licence and questioning my use of it here. Some of them are quite polite, others have demanded I change the licence immediately (presumably “or else”). I’m not going to change the license, and here’s why. Read Ryan Cartwright's reasons for his non-free licence at Freesoftware Magazine.

Debian Etch: Three updates today, and how to find out more about them in GNOME

Since I'm keeping my Self-Reliant Thin Client running all the time, every morning that there are new updates to Debian Etch, I seem them right away. We had three yesterday and three more today (for my architecture anyway): libmyspell3c2, linux-image-2.6.18-6-486, tzdata.

Support grows for Intel's mobile Linux despite slip

Delays to the latest version of Intel's project putting an open-source stack on its Atom processors have not deterred IT companies from early backing for the platform. Start-up Good OS has announced a relationship with MiTAC International to deliver its gOS Gadgets Linux operating system on a netbook based on Intel's Moblin 2.0.
