Following the release of Linux Version 2.6.20 a few days ago the development phase of the next kernel version has now taken off. Whereas Linus Torvalds during the last few days has already integrated some 800 patches into his developer kernel that will lead to 2.6.21, Andrew Morton has now informed the kernel developers about his plans for the next kernel version.

After a long and arduous journey that included a suspended validation last year, the Open Source Software Institute (OSSI) has announced that OpenSSL has regained its FIPS 140-2 validation and is now available for download. The validation process, which normally lasts a few months, took an astounding five years to complete, and those involved with the projects say they are already devising ways to avoid such long delays in future validations.
For most people new to Linux, their biggest concern will undoubtedly be how to install it alongside Windows. Most people will understandably want to dip their toes in before wiping out what they’re accustomed to, and many may still need to use specific Windows applications even if they do decide to switch to Linux full time.

It's easy to see why Ubuntu is the chosen one (pun intended) - one only has to pop in a CD on any fairly modern PC and see the results. A graphical desktop is available for use fairly soon and anyone who wishes to take the next step and install the distribution has a very easy setup to follow. Of course, there are plenty of other distributions which are equally usable - Ubuntu just happens to be the one which is best-known.
Guardian Digital on Feb. 7 announced the release of a new stable version EnGarde Secure Community Edition, version 3.0.12. The security-oriented Linux distribution features a 2.6.19 kernel and the latest versions of several server-based applications, and is intended for use as a Web, DNS, email, database, and general Internet server.
Enea says its high-availability network software will be available pre-integrated with Kontron's AdvancedTCA and AdvancedMC systems. The combined product targets media gateways, base station controllers, and session border controllers, and will run MontaVista Linux.

There is a newer distro in town, gaining traction. Sabayon Linux is an installable, Gentoo based live Cd/DVD. It has the stated goal of being 100% Gentoo compatible. A lot of attention has been paid to the Sabayon brand. Theming is consistent and striking. Sabayon is one of the best looking distros I have used.
