One business that relies heavily on open source software is Genuitec, the company that produces the proprietary subscription-based MyEclipse interactive development environment. Low-cost MyEclipse adds functionality to Eclipse, an open source application development software framework. Genuitec co-founder and Vice President of Technology Todd Williams says his company is able to keep prices affordable because it avoided using venture capital money, and because Genuitec itself is built completely on open source.

The Open Tuesday concept has reached South Africa and will kick off on March 13. Started in Finland, the fortnightly free events offers a chance for geeks and business people to meet.

BitWay Computadores, EnabledPeople and IMTECH Brazil companies today announced that they made large PC desktops deployments for «Computers for All» Brazil federal government program. Ready PC solution provided by Bitway includes preinstalled Linux XP Desktop operating system developed by EnabledPeople and supported by IMTECH. Estimated month deployment is about 10000 desktops with 50000 desktops already delivered.

This tutorial shows how you can set up a network-attached storage server with FreeNAS. Unless you live in a vacuum, you must’ve heard the talk about Novell finding itself under the Free Software Foundation's microscope. What's interesting is that it looks like under the current GPLv2 (GPL2) guidelines, Novell hasn’t done anything wrong. So, what's all the concern about then? Simple, it's called GPLv3 (GPL3).

Ambitious open source vendor Red Hat is on the last leg of its race to push 70 per cent of its business through the channel and is gearing up to launch an additional partner accreditation. Red Hat currently works with two levels of partners: entry level Ready Partners, and higher-touch Advanced Partners. Last year it rolled out its Certified Service Provider Programme (CSPP) in the US, aimed at higher level integrators and VARs, and is now bringing the level to Europe.

Access is finally shipping its next-generation Linux-based operating system and development kit for mobile devices. The company is showing off version 1.0 of Access Linux Platform (ALP), and various tools and high-end mobile applications processor support packages, at the 3GSM World Congress this week in Barcelona.
