Mepis.org reports - MEPIS has released SimplyMEPIS 6.0. This is the first public release of SimplyMEPIS to incorporate an Ubuntu foundation. Based on the Dapper LTS package pool, 6.0 is designed for stable long term use and support. Warren Woodford of MEPIS said - Converting MEPIS to the Ubuntu pool while incorporating the latest Open Source software advances has taken several months, but it's been worth the effort. The Ubuntu team did a great job with the development of Dapper LTS. During the building of 6.0, we've enjoyed an unprecedented response from testers in the MEPIS community. Derby is a great database for Ajax applications -- particularly if the client and server are on the same host -- due to Derby's zero admin requirements and ability to be embedded. This article explains all the steps and requirements to create an embedded database and Web server application. The source code and a ready to run application provided as a zip file are available for download. The Derby database acts as the data repository, the Jetty Web server or servlet container handles the HTTP requests, and Ajax technologies are used to enhance the presentation and responsiveness of the client.

Once a tool primarily used by law enforcement to help identify criminals, biometric technologies increasingly are being used by government and the private sector to authenticate a person’s identity, provide security at the nation’s borders and restrict access to secure sites—both buildings and computer networks. New software and other tools that can be used to help build improved biometric applications are now available from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
