Goobuntu, the Google operating system: fact or fiction?

Rumours of Google's potential foray into the world of desktop operating systems continue unabated. Following claims that Google is building an operating system based on Ubuntu by The Register yesterday, screen shots have started appearing on the Web, purportedly of the mythical operating system.

KDE 3.5.1 hits the desktops

The KDE project Tuesday announced immediate availability of KDE 3.5.1 -- a maintenance release for the latest generation of the popular free Linux/Unix desktop. The new offering provides corrections of problems, in addition to enhanced support for existing translations and new translations, the project said.

My desktop OS: Ubuntu

If you have any doubts about the source of innovation in information technology, you should look at the Mozilla web site. I just counted 1,028 extensions contributed by the community. Then take a look at the themes section. Even the colossus of Redmond with its billions of dollars hasn't mustered that kind of development effort for IE from its community over the years. An interesting research paper by three Harvard scholars, reveals that the apparent weakness of the open-source organizational model - the constraints on close collaboration among programmers - may actually be a hidden strength.

The research implies that open source's advantage doesn't stem from the strength of the programmer community. It stems from the weakness of that community.
