Censor the net by Congressional Action?

While I have not followed this story in detail, i.e. actually reading the content of the proposed legislation I tend to look askance at legislative attempts to limit speech particularly when the conventional press/media has been so very timid. Hence, consider their petition: "Mike Krempasky of Red State and I have jointly signed a letter (PDF) urging the U.S. House of Representatives to reject H.R. 4194 -- a stealth effort to regulate online political voices by pretending to defend them. The letter, drafted by our own Adam B, is: November 9, 2005 Dear Member of Congress,..."

The free software answer to the microsoft nightmare becoming OUR nightmare

  • Advogato; By Luke Kenneth Casson Leighton (Posted by tuxchick on Nov 10, 2005 8:12 PM CST)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Community
A recent slashdot and news.com article highlights the ten year nightmare for microsoft: the Internet taking over in a cheaper way, in which microsoft desktops cannot compete. My question to the free software community is: what is the answer (not to microsoft, as everyone keeps trying to fight microsoft on THEIR terms) but what is the answer to microsoft's nightmare also becoming OUR nightmare?

OpenDocument format gathers steam

Big guns in the software industry are massing behind OpenDocument as government customers show more interest in open-source alternatives to Microsoft's desktop software.

Secondhand Microsoft software goes on sale in UK

Microsoft Shafting Its Resellers - Welcome to the club. Here's what they say: "Microsoft has stunned some in the British reseller community by allowing a discount dealer to sell secondhand volume licenses, opening the floodgates for a used-software market." Note that this is UK only (so far), but it just might indicate someone within Microsoft wants to stop any incipient drift away from its OS. Just guessing.

Camino 1.0 Beta 1 brings you a heavily updated version of the only native Mac OS X browser using Mozilla.org's Gecko HTML rendering engine. The Mozilla Organization's Camino pages state that they have "made great improvements, adding new features, improving existing features, and fixing many bugs and performance issues."

[Ed.- and creating new issues: "Due to changes in the feature set, Camino no longer supports Mac OS X 10.1. The Mozilla Organization advises people still using OS X 10.1 to stay with Camino 0.8.4."]

Gates stirs Microsoft with dramatic 'more meetings' plea

  • TheRegister; By Andrew Orlowski (Posted by bstadil on Nov 10, 2005 5:22 PM CST)
[ED: Both the TheRegister and TheInquirer are pretty miffed about Microsoft's Memo leak. In not so many words accusing MS of gaming the Press and the Fourth Estate eating the bull Raw. What better way to counter than a spoof leaked memo]

MEMO from billg

Subject: Internet Software Services

Microsoft has always had to respond to innovators in the software business and seize the PR initiative.

Ten years ago this December, I wrote a memo entitled The Internet Tidal Puddle in which I attempted to undo the damage caused by my book, The Road Ahead, published just three months previously.

In The Road Ahead I failed to mention the internet at all. The same month, Netscape had floated on NASDAQ, creating the largest ever first day gain. Clearly, there was a puddle in the road ahead. So in my memo I warned that we could either step round the puddle, or step right into it, and risk being drowned.

In 1995 none of our products made use of TCP/IP. Now, a decade later, I can safely say that many of them do.

Autumn Symposium Rakes Over Copyright and Patent Law

  • Story Type: News Story
The organizers of the recent Symposium on Intellectual Property, Creativity, and the Innovation Process must possess extraordinary confidence in their mastery of the kind of intellectual crowd control required to manage the range of people they invited to the conference, from computer hackers shouting "Let me be free!" to businesspeople asking, "How can I find a revenue model in the new technologies and media?" alongside artists asking, "How can I find a revenue model in the new technologies and media?" (yes, artists are just businesspeople with funny haircuts) to librarians claiming, "Whatever emerges, we want a part of it," and a bevy of lawyers wondering, "How do all the doctrines I learned in law school--or (more urgently) teach in law school--hold up in the path of the current technological and social onslaught?"
