Motorola readies music-oriented Linux mobile phone
Motorola has announced several new multimedia-enabled mobile phones supporting music and video playback, including one new device based on embedded Linux. The Linux-based Motorola E680 could see US distribution, making it the first of Motorola's Linux-based mobile phones available outside the far East.
Motorola licenses third-party USB network stack for Linux phones
Motorola has licensed Belcarra's USBLAN networking technology for use in its Linux- and Java-based smartphones, Belcarra reports. USBLAN will enable Motorola's "mobile-PDA-MP3-embedded camera phones" to network with desktop computers running a variety of operating systems, according to Belcarra.

The Possio PX30 is a programmable Linux-based wireless router featuring Bluetooth, OSGi (Open Services Gateway Initiative), and Java support. It is an open platform supported by a "Developer Zone" website, and it targets OSGi-enabled network edge devices that integrate diverse kinds of networks.

Windows, Linux vie at the cash register
The two operating systems, which are contenders in the server market and to a lesser degree on the desktop, also are vying for a place in point-of-sales systems, the computerized registers at store checkout lines. Systems using versions of Microsoft's Windows accounted for the bulk of shipments in North America in 2003, but Linux shipments grew slightly faster over the course of the year, according to research from IHL Consulting Group.

OpenPKG Alert: OpenPKG Security Advisory (mutt)
According to a posting on Bugtraq [0], a buffer overflow exists in the mail user agent Mutt [1]. It can be triggered by incoming messages and there are reports about spam that has actually triggered this problem and crashed Mutt. The bug was reported to Red Hat by Niels Heinen. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) project assigned the id CAN-2004-0078 [2] to the problem.
