Imploding Barrels and Other Highlights From Hackfest DefCon

This year marked the 23rd DefCon, the hacker conference that began as an informal gathering for hackers to meet in person and party in the desert. Since its beginning, it has grown from fewer than 100 attendees to reportedly more than 20,000 all of them jammed into two hotels this year-Paris and Ballys-to learn the latest hacks and swap techniques.

While other IT industry heavyweights have embraced bug bounties and working with security researchers more generally, Oracle has set its face in the opposite direction in a blog post likening reverse engineering to cheating on your spouse.

Confusing Treasure for Junk in Linuxland

On one of the back desks there was a stack of Lenovo R-500s. We love supplying Lenovo laptops because they are the most durable machines we’ve given away. Pete was working on them in order to make them ready for this school year. As we passed that table on the way to my desk, our visitor jerked his head in that direction and asked, “Are those being prepared for recycle?”

Windows 10 From a Linux User's Perspective

I've spent quite a bit of time testing out Windows 10 on a secondary computer. And like any operating system upgrade, the change takes a bit to get used to. Since I feel more comfortable with Linux distributions than with Windows, I thought it would be interesting to see what Microsoft has done since Windows 7 and 8.

Diversity enriches middle school Linux user group

This article is co-authored by Mara Chai The Community School of Excellence (CSE) in Saint Paul, Minnesota, provides something unique to the open source world: a Linux club based in a Hmong charter school. One could say that our club, the CSE Asian Penguins, provides a dose of diversity to the Linux community, which does not have many Hmong participants (although we keep looking for them!). read more

Linux Concerns: Convenience vs. Security

Ask why you should use Linux, and inevitably someone will claim that it is more secure than Windows, and doesn't need anti-virus protection, either.

Making the Switch to Open Source Gaming

There was a time years ago when Linux and gaming weren’t fit to be in the same sentence. I first made the jump to Linux around the late ’90s with a copy of Doom II. There were glitches at times: the occasional crash, loss of sound and lack of some features. The flaws of the Linux version in contrast to its Windows counterpart turned me away from Linux gaming at first.

Installing Lighttpd with PHP5 (PHP-FPM) and MySQL on Debian 8 (Jessie)

Lighttpd is a secure, fast, standards-compliant web server designed for speed-critical environments. This tutorial shows how you can install Lighttpd on a Debian 8 (Jessie) server with PHP5 support (through PHP-FPM) and MySQL as a database server. PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager) is a new PHP FastCGI implementation with some additional features useful for sites of any size, especially busier sites. I use PHP-FPM in this tutorial instead of Lighttpd's spawn-fcgi.

Bodhi Linux 3.1.0 Release - Featuring the Moksha Desktop

This release is a bigger deal for the Bodhi team than our previous update releases have been in the past. The reason for this is because this release is the first to use the Moksha Desktop which we have forked from E17. Because it is built on the rock solid foundation that E17 provides, even this first release of the Moksha Desktop is stable and is something I feel comfortable using in a production environment...

An internship that harnesses the power of community

I was both nervous and excited to begin my intern experience at Red Hat. I followed a path slightly different from that of the typical intern, having worked previously in the corporate world and then spending time at home with my children. While I looked into my options for returning to work, I spoke with several people at Red Hat who were very open to meeting with me, encouraged my interest in marketing analytics, and provided me with other resources and contacts. The result of those conversations was this amazing opportunity to intern with Red Hat's marketing operations team. read more
