JavaScript is everywhere. So are we all OK with that?

The JavaScript programming language has been in the wars over the years. Oft derided for security concerns, its ‘amateur’ web designer following and for ‘borrowing’ its name from the beefier brew that is Java itself, it has been a rough 19 years or so.

Whats the best entry point for women in computing? Open source.

Leslie Hawthorn is the new community manager at Elastic Search, an open source real time data and analytics company, and a member of the program committee for the Grace Hopper conference that is held each year to increase "visibility for the contributions of women to computing."

Lightworks Video Editor Pulls Plenty of Weight

Lightworks is a professional-grade nonlinear video editor now available for Linux. It is a cross-platform editor from a well-known player in the media market, so this first-time Linux release could be a big thing. Lightworks version 11.5 for Linux was released late last month, following three years of development. Linux users now can download a free version or pay for a Pro version.

Hands up if you have one good reason to port an app to ARM

ARM servers look tantalising. Various CPU vendors offer multi-core silicon at a price that makes Intel go weak at the knees. Those CPUs also slurp so little power that by the time a senior manager reads about them in an in-flight magazine you'll be asked why you're not using them yet.

Medical Device dev platform runs Linux on DaVinci SoC

eInfochips announced a development platform for medical imaging device designs, based on two tiny COMs that integrate TI DaVinci DM816x and DM814x SoCs. About two years ago, eInfochips came out with its first Andromeda Reference Platform for video processing, videoconferencing, and video surveillance applications built around its own computer-on-modules (COMs).

Rugged SODIMM-style COM family adopts i.MX6

Toradex tipped a new Apalis-family COM that runs Linux on a Freescale i.MX6 SoC, and offers 10-year availability and industrial temperature range operation. The Apalis iMX6 computer-on-module (COM) is a close cousin of the Nvidia Tegra 3-based Apalis T30 module announced last March. This time, Toradex has chosen a system-on-chip that is more commonly used in the embedded world: the similarly ARM Cortex-A9-based Freescale i.MX6.

Microsoft revival only if Gates and Ballmer leave

A fortnight ago, it is fair to say, few of us among the masses had heard of Satya Nadella. But now it is different: the man has accepted the poisoned chalice that the job of Microsoft chief executive has become and he will be front and centre at Redmond at least for a few years.

The Age of “Commonalities” has Arrived

  • ConsortiumInfo.org Standards Blog; By Andy Updegrove (Posted by Andy_Updegrove on Feb 7, 2014 5:09 PM EDT)

Ten years ago this month I predicted that the traditional practice of developing standards would no longer be sufficient to provide solutions to ICT challenges. Guess what?

Let's talk Linux, but in a language we can all understand

Honestly, the language of Linux doesn’t register on the radar of many computer users. And while it’s a great feeling to be a part of the “in crowd,” that's also one of the reasons why Linux often has a hard time gaining much of a foothold with desktops. Sure, anyone these days can learn a GUI -- but Linux users are challenged to learn a completely different way of thinking, a different language, and a different wiring of the brain.

Lesser-Known gedit Keyboard Shortcuts

One might ask: “Why bother writing about gedit keyboard shortcuts? Are those items not documented?” Well, not quite. Here is where things start to get interesting...

In the Fedora installer, you can choose your desired desktop (and Debian does this, too)

Say what you will about the Anaconda installer, especially the new "hub and spoke" version (and much of what has been said is far from kind), but the ability to select any of the major desktops during the installation process is a win.

Fedora 20 is looking kind of mature these days

  • Frugal technology, simple living and guerrilla large-appliance repair; By Steven Rosenberg (Posted by Steven_Rosenber on Feb 7, 2014 11:26 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Editorial; Groups: Fedora
With the release of Fedora 21 delayed by at least three months due to the ramping up of the Fedora.Next initiative, the project's current release, Fedora 20, is likely to be the closest thing users will ever get to a "long-term support" release from the Red Hat-sponsored community project. And I plan to enjoy it.
