Open-Source Physics on Linux
My last several articles have covered lots of software
for
doing research in the sciences. But one important area I haven't
covered in detail is the resources available for teaching the next
generation of computational scientists. To fill this gap, you can use
the code provided through the Open Source Physics project.

Prenda Law: EFF has “the same goals” as “terrorist group Wikileaks”
Prenda has been seeking dismissal of pending lawsuits around the country in an effort to contain the fallout. In one North Georgia case, Prenda had already obtained a default judgment after the defendant, Rajesh Patel, failed to respond to Prenda's lawsuit. Yet the law firm is now seeking to dismiss the case without Patel paying a dime.
But Patel has said that before dismissing the case, the judge should investigate Prenda's misconduct and force Prenda to pay Patel's legal bills. In a strident response filed on Saturday, Prenda lawyer Jacques Nazaire accused Patel's lawyer Blair Chintella of engaging in an ideological witch hunt with the support of the dastardly Electronic Frontier Foundation.

How To Put Your Shields Up To Protect Your WordPress Site
A brute force attack is based on the premise that a computer, or a botnet (which is a group of hijacked computers acting as one), can continue to attempt to guess at usernames and passwords in rapid succession, using such speed that eventually they’ll get in. This is especially true if the password is merely a word from the dictionary, no matter how obscure the word is. Security experts have demonstrated over and over again how quickly such a password can be cracked by using a brute force attack, which is why a “gibberish” password utilizing upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols is recommended. Not so long ago, a password of eight characters was deemed sufficient length. Nowadays it’s recommended that your password be ten or more characters long.

Open source potential in capital markets
When I tell people about OpenGamma, reactions are often incredulous.
We’ve built a full market risk analytics platform for capital markets—with all the bells and whistles you’d expect, such as a declarative calculation engine, a flashy HTML5 GUI, and a comprehensive analytics library—and we’ve released it under the Apache 2.0 License. And, our key customers and users at the moment are some of the world’s most secretive technologists: hedge fund managers. To an outsider, this may look like a curious combination.
Light weight KlyDE gives Xfce, Gnome some heavy weight competition
I run KDE Plasma Workspaces on all my devices - Plasma Desktop on my PCs, Plasma Netbook on my, as obvious, netbooks and laptops and Plasma Active on my Nexus 7. The reason I chose Plasma over others is the features and functionality it offers which are missing from every other desktop environments.
However, I do come across users who don't want all these features and functionality and instead need a very limited set of applications and features. They find GNOME or Xfce to be the best solution for their needs. Xfce can be increasingly appealing for older and slower hardware (though I am running Plasma on an Atom powered Dell Mini, which is an extremely slow machine, but I see no issues in terms of performance on this device).

Big data in modern biology
There is now no question that genomics, the study of the genomes of organisms and a field that includes intensive efforts to determine the entire DNA sequence of organisms, has joined the big data club. The development of prolific new DNA sequencing technologies is forcing biologists to embrace the dizzying terms of terabytes, petabytes and, looming on the horizon, exabytes.
Oracle Serious About Java Security–Maybe
We’re not ready to tell you we think it’s safe to reactivate your Java browser plugin–in fact, just the opposite–but we will say that Oracle is at least giving the appearance they’re now serious about addressing browser-side Java’s safety. Early last week they issued a security patch that fixed either 41 or 42 Java security issues, depending on what website you’re reading.
