Android market share is dropping in the US

According to the most recent report from comScore, an analytics company, the market share of Android has been dropping in the past few months. And interesting enough, Iphone market share is rising.

Ubuntu - Raring Ringtail - hits beta, disables Windows dual-boot tool

Ubuntu 13.04, scheduled for release on April 25, is now available for testing in its second and final beta release. Nicknamed "Raring Ringtail," Ubuntu 13.04 is one of the final releases that's just for desktops and servers. By this time next year, Canonical intends to release a single version of Ubuntu targeting all form factors, including smartphones and tablets.

Gamers are the people that push PC hardware forward. Now for the first time a major Gamer PC vendor is offering Linux and it's loaded for max fragging. Dell's Alienware division is now out with its X51 Ubuntu PC and it's the sweetest Linux rig we've ever seen from Dell (or any other major tier 1 PC vendor).

The game developer Wildfire Games has recently released a new version of the free real-time strategy game 0 A.D. Magadha. The new alpha version includes a variety of improvements and so achieves a further milestone on the way to the final game release.

Upgrading Bodhi Linux to 2.3.0

This isn’t a major upgrade. I’m sure there are some bug fixes and minor enhancements, but it mainly upgrades some essential software, such as the Linux Kernel, Enlightenment window manager, Midori browser, Terminology terminal emulator and Ubiquity, the Ubuntu default installer used by Bodhi. In addition, this update adds eCcess, a new system tool, and includes a slew of new themes for dressing-up the desktop.

Alienware X51 deploying with Ubuntu!

It's the Alienware X51. No doubt it will come to many as a shock, as it did to myself. It would seem Dell wants to get serious with Linux gamers, and more specifically with Ubuntu gamers. This is great news!

Windows 7 & Windows 8 vs. Ubuntu 13.04 & Fedora 18

Last month Phoronix published Intel OpenGL benchmarks showing Windows 8 outperforming Ubuntu 13.04 with the latest Windows and Linux drivers from Intel. I also showed that even with the KDE and Xfce desktops rather than the default Unity/Compiz desktop to Ubuntu, Windows 8 still was faster on this Intel "Ivy Bridge" platform. The new benchmarks to share today from this Intel Ultrabook are the Windows 8 and Ubuntu 13.04 results but also with performance figures added in from Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 x64 and Fedora 18.

Open payment system for Firefox OS

Mozilla has released an early draft version of a payment service API, enabling Firefox OS app developers to process purchases. The API design is in part based on Google Wallet, but the WebPayment API will remain open to being used for a wide range of payment service providers.

Debian gets served by Bytemark

The Debian Project has announced that Bytemark Hosting has donated a fully populated 16 server blade HP BladeSystem with HP Modular Storage Arrays containing 57TB of storage. The new server, which will make its home at Bytemark's new data centre in York, is said to be worth £150,000 per annum in commercial terms. Bytemark said that they have relied on Debian on their servers since they started the company in 2002 and said it "was always an embarrassingly good deal".

This week the Apache OpenMeetings project released version 2.1 of its open source web conferencing platform. The OpenMeetings 2.1 release is the first release of the project since it graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a topApache OpenMeetings level project, in December of 2012.
