Is the pending German Copyright Bill good or bad for the Web?
A new copyright bill pending approval by the German Parliament would require search engines and other commercial actors to pay a license for using headlines or short snippets from their articles. The publishers essentially want a piece of the revenue generated by the inclusion of their news items in search results. The publishers argue that German copyright laws are insufficient and don’t allow them to use the copyright laws in a systematic manner against the widespread re-use of that information.
Splashtop for Ubuntu Delivers 10x Performance over VNC
For Ubuntu users, Splashtop Streamer offers a supercharged, high-performance alternative to Virtual Network Computing (VNC) and other remote desktop software. Due to its efficient protocol, algorithms and optimizations, Splashtop has been shown in performance benchmarks to deliver up to 15x higher video frame rates and up to 10x lower latency times than its competition. Splashtop sessions are secured with SSL and 256-bit AES encryption, allowing it to serve as a secure pipe between devices, in some cases allowing users to eliminate their need for separate VPN solutions.
SolusOS and Me
Ikey Doherty, the creator of SolusOS, a Debian-based distribution is one such person. Ikey came from humble and rocky beginnings. A "builder" by trade, what we in the US refer to as a Carpenter, Ikey delved into computers and software via a back door of sorts. How does someone go from physically building structures to building operating systems?
The Back Story On The Open NVIDIA Tegra Driver
New details have been shared with Phoronix about the back-story that led to the work on the open-source NVIDIA Tegra DRM graphics driver that will be introduced in the Linux 3.8 kernel. For months there has been an independently-developed Tegra DRM driver that is finally being merged during the next kernel cycle (3.8). In September it was then shared at XDC2012 that NVIDIA would be opening up some Tegra documentation and then days ago I wrote that NVIDIA was contributing to this open-source driver. This week they even dropped some Tegra 2D acceleration code that works with this open-source Linux graphics driver.

Could the Girl Scouts position themselves as a tech giant?
Now that full-fledged computers are approaching the size of a USB Flash drive and are being sold for less than $75, my interest in designing a Linux computer of my own has been re-awakened.
As an educator, I would stock that computer full of free creativity and learning software, logic puzzle games, tutorial screencasts, engaging multimedia and artwork created with open source software. Naturally, I would use Linux as the operating system for that computer.
No matter how hard I worked designing such a computer, finding purchasers would not be easy. People are naturally wary of spending money on a computer designed by an unknown entity. So I started thinking, could I volunteer my time to support some well-known entity to sell a very affordable, very lightweight Linux computer that would benefit students worldwide? This entity or organization would need to composed of millions of smart and energetic youth and parents who already collaborate effectively to raise funds for their cause. I'm thinking the Girl Scouts of the USA.
Seeking to head off Samsung argument, Apple shortens a patent term
The idea appears to be to cut off one of Samsung's post-trial arguments. Samsung argued that notwithstanding the jury verdict, Apple's design patents are invalid for a number of reasons; in particular, it argues that the D'677 patent is invalid for so-called "double patenting." In other words, the D'087 and the D'677 patents are too similar to be granted separate patents.
Today's move suggests Apple feels at least a bit threatened by that argument. It's not hard to understand why; the patent drawings do look very similar.

Two Years of Bodhi Linux, Three Years of Blogging
This year has flown by. My entire life - both on the internet and off the internet has been moving at a rapid pace and I have enjoyed almost every moment of it. I've been so focused on my last semester of graduate work that I completely forgot to make two posts I've been making every year.
Creating Simple Virtual Hosts With mod_mysql_vhost On Lighttpd (Ubuntu 12.10)
This guide explains how you can use mod_mysql_vhost to create simple virtual hosts on a lighttpd web server on Ubuntu 12.10. With mod_mysql_vhost, lighttpd can read the vhost configuration from a MySQL database. Currently, you can store the domain and the document root in the MySQL database which results in very simple virtual hosts. If you need more directives for your vhosts, you'd have to configure them in the global section of lighttpd.conf, which means they'd be valid for all vhosts. Therefore, mod_mysql_vhost is ideal if your vhosts differ only in the domain and document root.

Samsung faces two-front patent war as Ericsson files suit in Texas
Samsung is already embroiled in a worldwide patent fight with Apple, but the company will now face a patent attack from another direction. Swedish telecom giant Ericsson sued Samsung today, saying the Korean company wouldn't renew a patent cross-licensing agreement after two years of negotiation.
Samsung refused a deal on terms that the rest of the industry has accepted, Ericsson representatives said today. The specific terms offered weren't disclosed, but documents show they were "Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory," or FRAND. Just what constitutes a FRAND rate is very much in dispute right now, however, with multiple US federal courts and the US International Trade Commission considering the issue.

Set the Xfce Clock the way you want it
Using the Clock app in the upper panel of the Xfce 4.8 desktop in Debian Wheezy, I didn’t like the stock way date and time was displayed as just time only in the default: 08:23 AM. Luckily when you right-click on Xfce’s Clock in the panel, left-click on Properties and choose “Custom Format” under Xfce’s Clock options, you can use anything that the Unix/Linux date command switches offer.
Xubuntu 12.10 - Day 4 - LibreOffice
