TIP: Block Spam from domains on the South Africa ISPA Spam Hall of Shame using DNSBL

The South Africa Internet service providers association (ISPA) maintains a list of known spammers dubbed the Spam Hall of Shame. The list is contains both domains as well as email addresses, this list is published on a webpage without downloadable formats. I extract the data from this web page and publish it in a DNSBL ispa.rbl.baruwa.net, i use this DNSBL in my SAAS mail security product. So anyone should be able to use it in a similar way to the other DNSBL's like spamhaus and spamcop etc.

  • Story Type: Tutorial; Groups: Debian
This guide explains how to set up WebDAV with MySQL authentication (using mod_auth_mysql) on Apache2 on a Debian Squeeze server. WebDAV stands for Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning and is a set of extensions to the HTTP protocol that allow users to directly edit files on the Apache server so that they do not need to be downloaded/uploaded via http://FTP. Of course, WebDAV can also be used to upload and download files.

LaKademy — First KDE Event for All of Latin America

Latin America is a big place with many opportunities for KDE; major deployments of KDE software are proof. Over the years, groups of KDE developers have emerged in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and probably other places. These groups work together to make a better KDE. As we know, meeting and talking in person is important to strengthen the bonds in a community. So we decided to organize a Latin American meeting of KDE contributors following the lead of the first Akademy-br in 2009. Like Akademy-br, the first LaKademy will be similar to a sprint for developers and one for people interested in promoting KDE in this part of the world. The first LaKademy is taking place in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil from April 27th to May 1st, 2012. People were invited from Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and Colombia. 12 known KDE contributors have confirmed their presence, along with 6 newcomers. Current KDE contributors recommended newcomers based on their abilities and their potential to become long-time KDE contributors. read more

Linus, Linux and the Millennium Technology Prize

It doesn't happen often here in the Linux blogosphere that FOSS fans agree unanimously on -- well, on pretty much anything. Truth be told, there's generally good reason for the dissension. Take Microsoft's latest maneuvers, for example -- are they good news? Bad news? It's not always easy to tell. Last week, however, one of those rare announcements was made that brought universal joy to Linux aficionados around the globe.

Monitoring OSX and Linux with Nagios and SNMP

  • BeginLinux.com; By Mike Weber (Posted by aweber on Apr 23, 2012 6:01 AM EDT)
  • Story Type: Tutorial
OSX is somewhat unique both in the fact that this is not a common server which is monitored and also your actually working with two operating systems, FreeBSD under the hood and OSX built on top. However, these examples could also be used for Linux distros with a few modifications. SNMP is selected for creating the checks because it is the easiest to deploy with minimal time on the servers to be monitored.

Report: The alternative OS, my top 5

I have always had a fascination with the idea of alternative operating systems and over the years i have come across and played with (even developed applications for) a variety of them. However there has always been a few I've followed closely which have stood out, head and shoulders above the crowd. I have compiled a short list and description of what in my opinion are the top 5 best alternative, open source operating systems out there.

Many FSF Priority Projects Still Not Progressing

Last October I wrote about the sad state of the Free Software Foundation's high priority projects... Most of the projects are basically not going anywhere. Many of them at the time were not really advancing in their goals, haven't had releases in a while, or coding hasn't even started. It's been more than a half-year and still there's no significant work towards clearing many of projects from the FSF list.

GNOME 3.6 is getting serious with Initial System Setup

GNOME 3.4.1 released a few days ago, but its progress didn’t stop. The releasing cycle for 3.6 has already begun. To be honest, I don’t think that 3.4 release was quite exciting, apart maybe from GTK 3.4 that brought a lot of new features.
