In the mean time, more Internet companies join the strike, such as The Document Foundation with their LibreOffice website (still allowing access to the rest of the site) and the XMBC project's website, saying "Today we are proud to stand together with organizations around the world to protest SOPA and its Senate counterpart PIPA [...] All services will be restored on January 19th, EST time. SSH: The VPN No One Remembers
I'm sure everyone is aware as to what SSH (specifically OpenSSH) is, especially since there's been a lot of discussion about it on LinuxForum.com as of late. But, I don't know if many people actually realize just how powerful SSH can be. If used right, you can turn a regular SSH server into a non-resource intensive, very much free VPN server.
SOPA, Internet regulation, and the economics of piracy
Earlier this month, I detailed at some length why claims about the purported economic harms of piracy, offered by supporters of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT-IP Act (PIPA), ought to be treated with much more skepticism than they generally get from journalists and policymakers.
Black Wednesday
No, it's sadly not a day for shopping. Today, some of the most visited websites are dark to raise awareness of two bills now making their way through the U.S. Congress.
Use Minitube To Watch YouTube Videos On Your Desktop (Linux Mint 11)
This article is about how to watch YouTube videos on your desktop with a tool called Minitube. Minitube is a piece of software with a nice GUI that lets you enter keywords into a searchbar just like on youtube.com to display a list where you can choose your desired video from. It is then played directly in the graphical interface without the need to install any flash player for your browser or even open it.

Use alsamixer to turn off the annoying, loud beep (aka system bell) in Debian Squeeze when you shutdown or restart
Before I installed the 2.6.39 kernel from Backports on my Debian Squeeze system, I quieted the annoyingly loud system beep (aka system bell; it used to be a real bell back in the day) from startling me and waking others by "blacklisting" the pcspkr in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf. Since that stopped working in 2.6.39, and the beep returned (it is LOUD), I figured there had to be another way to shut it up.

This blog will go dark on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 to protest the SOPA and PIPA bills restricting the open web
I'm joining Identi.ca, Wikipedia, BoingBoing, MoveOn, Mozilla, Reddit and scores of other websites large and small in going dark on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 to protest the pending Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), which would allow U.S. copyright holders to shut down foreign web sites with only a suspicion of copyright infringement.

ALICE and friends. Artificial Intelligence Reloaded
If you've been following my posts on artificial intelligence (or AI, if you prefer), you may have already spent some time playing with Eliza and consulting with the Emacs Doctor. I hope so because I'm going to take this one step further. For a more credible machine intelligence, you'll soon run into something called AIML, or Artificial Intelligence Markup Language. Log in to your Linux system and let's get going . . .
