Wintel tablets may cost $600+ because Microsoft and Intel are unwilling to take a pay cut
Have you ever wondered why your PC is so expensive? Well, a good portion of that cash goes straight into the pockets of Intel for its processors and Microsoft for Windows. Unfortunately, while the market has seen that the days of expensive PCs are over, executives at Microsoft and Intel may fight to retain high PC prices as we move into the next era of the PC: tablets.
SOPA/PIPA Could Have Huge Impact on IT
If the SOPA/PIPA bills in the US Congress become law, it could potentially have a bigger impact on IT and your company web site than you think because these laws will make it fairly trivial to draw your company into a copyright street fight.
ITC gives Motorola the early win in patent fight with Apple
Friday's ruling isn't yet the final word from the ITC, and the panel doesn't always rule the same way as the ALJ. Still, the decision is an indicator that Apple's IP fight against Android may not be as easy as former Apple CEO Steve Jobs might have hoped when he said he hoped to "go thermonuclear war" against the platform. Though Apple has not commented publicly on the initial ITC ruling, Motorola was quick to send out a victorious statement for its early win.

Install Oracle Java (JDK) 7 in Ubuntu via PPA Repository
Oracle JDK7 itself is not hosted in the PPA because that's not allowed by the new Java license (which is also the reason why it has been removed from the official Ubuntu repositories); the package in the PPA automatically downloads Oracle Java (JDK) 7 from its official website and installs it on your computer, just like the flashplugin-installer package does.
Migrate from Plesk to cPanel via command line
If you're anything like me, you prefer to do things via command line (CLI) rather than relying on a GUI to do most things in Linux. You also realize that while some of us don't like to use control panels (plesk, cpanel, webmin, etc..), they are necessary when providing a shared hosting environment for your clients. While cPanel has an excellent migration utility (and they'll even migrate it for you for free in most cases), it will sometimes fail for one reason or another. If you do it via command line, you'll be able to cut out some of those failures.

Aligning Linux Distributions with Presidential Hopefuls
Most politicians probably don’t use Linux. After all, some of them have barely figured out computers at all. But since the American presidential campaigning season is once again upon us, I’ve been wondering to myself lately: If the candidates did run Linux, which distribution would they choose? At the risk of offending various groups of people, here are my answers, for better or for worse.

Install Quick Access on Linux Mint 12 KDE or any KDE installation
I am always looking for tools and applications that make the desktop a lot more fun to use, while boosting my productivity at the same time. Such tools should accomplish those objectives without getting in the way. I have already written about two of them in 2 cool reasons to use the K Desktop Environment.
In this article, steps you need to install another one of such applications in Linux Mint 12 KDE are presented.

Google accused of vandalising OpenStreetMap
Google has once again been accused of underhand business tactics, this time by OpenStreetMap. The not-for-profit organisation published a light-on-detail blog post alleging that Mountain View was "moving and abusing" the mapping outfit's data. However the very same post appears to have been completely debunked by an OSM sysadmin, who claims to have first uncovered the issue.
#oss2012 is hereby Cancelled
It is with great sadness and profound regret that I e-mail you this morning with the news that we’ve had to make the hard decision to cancel Open Source Scotland.
Who can afford Open Source?
I just came across an italian programmer who says that he adores FOSS but can't afford to write it. With his permission, I published his complete explanation on my website.

Windows 8's locked bootloaders: much ado about nothing, or the end of the world as we know it?
Microsoft has published the hardware requirements that manufacturers must follow if they want to slap a "Designed for Windows 8" sticker onto their systems. In among many innocuous requirements—multitouch systems must support at least five points of touch, there must be at least 10 GB of free space available to the user, and more—are a set of requirements for Windows 8 systems' firmware. These requirements have reignited Linux users' fears that they will be locked out of Windows 8 hardware.
5daysprofitable: A corporate web site, start to finish, in 4 hours
In my previous article, I explained that I would embark in the Herculean task of starting a company, and make it successful and profitable, in just 5 days. And by using free software.
The first piece of this complex puzzle is a corporate web site. I had mine ready in less than 4 hours, start to finish. Here is what I did.

How IP Laws Have Locked Up Martin Luther King's Brilliance
Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day -- and there are many reasons to celebrate his legacy. But one thing that should not be celebrated is what his heirs have done with his words ever since. In the past, we've discussed how his heirs have done everything they can to try to use intellectual property laws to lock up MLK Jr.'s legacy -- and set up a toll booth to charge anyone for making use of them in any way, shape or form. The most recent episode of On The Media explored this...
