Increased Performance In Linux With zRam (Virtual Swap Compressed in RAM)

  • WebUpd8; By Andrew Dickinson (Posted by hotice on Oct 3, 2011 7:41 AM CST)
While trying to optimize the elementary OS performance, Sergey Davidoff stumbled upon a project called compcache that creates a RAM based block device which acts as a swap disk, but is compressed and stored in memory instead of swap disk (which is slow), allowing very fast I/O and increasing the amount of memory available before the system starts swapping to disk.

Btrfs File-System For Old Computers?

  • Story Type: News Story
Recently I published benchmarks of Btrfs from a Serial ATA 3.0 SSD (the excellent OCZ Vertex 3 SSD) and those results were interesting, but most people aren't running 6Gb/s solid-state drives, so how does this next-generation file-system perform on the opposite end of the spectrum? In this article are EXT4 and Btrfs benchmarks from an old Core Duo notebook with a 5400RPM mobile hard drive.

Serving CGI Scripts With Nginx On Debian Squeeze/Ubuntu 11.04

This tutorial shows how you can serve CGI scripts (Perl scripts) with nginx on Debian Squeeze/Ubuntu 11.04. While nginx itself does not serve CGI, there are several ways to work around this. I will outline three solutions: the first is to proxy requests for CGI scripts to Thttpd, a small web server that has CGI support, while the second and third solution are very similar - both use a CGI wrapper to serve CGI scripts.

Intrusion detection systems : Using tripwire on Linux

Whether you're an experienced system administrator or a Linux beginner, whether you're managing an enterprise-grade network or just your home network, you must be aware of security issues. One common mistake is to think that if you're a home user with few world-facing machines you're exempt from malicious attacks. The attacker will not get from you what (s)he can get from a large corporate network, but that does not mean you're safe. The earlier you become security-aware, the better. While the subject of network security is huge, today we chose an interesting piece of software named tripwire, a HIDS (Host-based Intrusion Detection System).

Autism - Where Linux Falls Silent

Being as impartial and honest as I can be, the basic Linux gamesphere, to include the educational applications, fall short of the Autistic child's needs. Of course, I understand that it was never geared for this, but I believe there needs to be some awareness of the condition and a way we, as an Open Source Community, can help.

6 Commercial Android Video Players

  • LinuxLinks.com; By Steve Emms (Posted by sde on Oct 2, 2011 5:31 AM CST)
  • Story Type: Reviews, Roundups
A built-in video player has been included in the base Android operating system ever since Android 1.5 (Cupcake) was released back in April 2009. That player offered video playback for MPEG-4 and 3GP formats. However, even with the latest releases of Android for smartphones and tablets (Gingerbread, Honeycomb respectively) many users find the built-in player to be inadequate, due to support for a limited number of video formats, being unable to watch high definition video even on dual core processors, and generally deprived of features.
