I use open source tools whenever and wherever I can. I returned to college a while ago to earn a master's degree in educational leadership. Even though I switched from my favorite Linux laptop to a MacBook Pro (since I wasn't sure Linux would be accepted on campus), I decided I would keep using my favorite tools, even on MacOS, as much as I could. A lot has happened in the open-source community recently. First, Microsoft acquired GitHub and then people started to look for GitHub alternatives without even taking a second to think about it...... But, today, GitLab made a smart move by making some of its high-tier plans free for educational institutes and open-source projects. Learning management systems (LMS) are the software powering online education, enabling teachers and trainers to share coursework, administer assessments, and track students' learning. There are a variety of LMSes available from proprietary vendors, but an enduring open source choice is Moodle.

Today we are delivering Linspire 7 SP1 for general release. With this release we have several fixes and changes that we have made to Linspire. The open educational resources (OER) movement has been gaining momentum over the past few years, as educators—from kindergarten classes to graduate schools—turn to free and open source educational content to counter the high cost of textbooks.

It's nearly impossible to enter a school these days without seeing an abundance of technology. Despite this influx of computers into education, funding inequity forces school systems to make difficult choices. Some educators see things as they are and wonder, "Why?" while others see problems as opportunities and think, "Why not?"
