Avant Window Navigator is an application for Linux that emulates the newer task bars included in Windows and MacOS. It can be freely downloaded from the Ubuntu repositories.

The task bar, first introduced with Windows 95, has remained a fixture in a number of operating systems for many years. Small additions have been made like searching or quick launch shortcuts, but the basic formula has not changed a great deal. Ubuntu (or Gnome more specifically) is no exception.

Windows 7 and the MacOS have broken away from this established paradigm, merging quick launch shortcuts and the list of running programs by allowing you to launch a new instance of an application, and then select it while it is running, using the same icon. It saves on screen real estate, and both OS's do it in a fairly sexy way.
