A Call to Support a New Public-Private Partnership In U.S. Standards Development

Last week NIST published a Request for Information that went entirely unnoticed in the press. It's goal is to assess the “Effectiveness of Federal Agency Participation in Standardization in Select Technology Sectors,” and it shouldn't be ignored.

Why? Because unlike many countries that manage standards development from the "top down," US industry has long promoted private sector control of a "bottom up" standards development process deployed across hundreds of sector-specific "silo" organizations. But with tens of billions of dollars of public funds allocated to complex, cross-sectoral challenges like the SmartGrid and Electronic Health Records, this system has been found incapable of rising to the challenge without government intervention.

Something needs to be done.
